1 EXT. THE EARTHREALM – NIGHT
Opening in on a birds-eye view of a desecrated and gloomy Earthrealm. Barely anything is seen. FUJIN, speaking in a weary and depressing tone, narrates the horrifying scene.
FUJIN: (Narrating) “…The future. A dark and desolate world.”
Dramatic zoom in, Hordes of Tekunin ships patrol the skies, yet float around with deceptive tranquility. Small and vibrant flashes of light emit from the ebony-stained rubble on the ground.
FUJIN: (Narrating) “A world of Armageddon, war, struggle, and loss.....”
Earth’s denizens, humans, walk in single file lines through a narrow radiating cage, with Tekunin sentinels patrolling from the balcony, armed with ray guns. The captured humans look down in utter depression as they continue walking in their rags and technological neck-braces.
FUJIN: (Narrating) “We’re fighting a war that cannot be won. Our worlds are on the edge of destruction.”
A hooded figure who appears to be KOBRA wanders among the rubble and debris, carrying a flashlight in hand. He quickly takes cover as several Tekunin vehicles pass by, and then continues trekking when the coast is clear.
FUJIN: (Narrating) “Are we destined to follow this path? Destined to destroy each other? Or can we change who we are and unite? Can we truly advert Futures End?”
Kobra takes a knee and finds a circular-shaped gem. He dusts the gem off, revealing the classic ‘Mortal Kombat’ dragon logo. Before he could savor his awe, Kobra notices a flash behind him and turns around, only to have his eyes widened at the sight of the Tekunin Patrols. We zoom in on the Mortal Kombat dragon logo and the title rolls: MORTAL KOMBAT: FUTURES END
2 EXT. SKIES OF EARTHREALM – NIGHT
The colossal floating Tekunin ships lock on the Bell Tower, a familiar arena. A few part from the rest and the massive hatches open, ejecting more smaller pods downwards to the tower.
3 INT. BELL TOWER
Sirens ring and the tower’s bell gongs loudly. NIGHTWOLF and KENSHI quickly become alarmed, turning their heads to each other. They quickly share a nod and dash towards each other, the contact resulting in them both warping to a lower floor. SUB-ZERO, SONYA BLADE, and HOTARU rise from their bed rolls in surprise.
NIGHTWOLF: “They found us…”
The three immediately scan their surroundings.
“One of you need to come with me.”
Hotaru looks at his newfound comrades briefly before returning sight to Sonya Blade, exchanging a nod before rushing off with her, leaving Kenshi, Sub-Zero and Nightwolf to assume a fighting stance, waiting for their pursuers to make their entrance. Sonya Blade and Hotaru don’t stop to catch their breath and continue running from their potential enslavers as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, Kenshi, Sub-Zero, and Nightwolf continue to look around the area. Within a few seconds, the ceiling has been already breached, as a drill from one of the massive machines forces its way in. Its large and intimidating glowing yellow eyes scan the room for the kombatants. As soon as it makes eye-contact with all three fighters, more Tekunin cyborgs infiltrate the spire. In an instant, Sub-Zero, Kenshi, and NIghtwolf engage with 2 of the 3 Tekunin Sentinels. Nightwolf, dual-wielding his tomahawk proudly, dashes one of the colossuses, only to be smacked down with ease by the machine’s enormous fist. Still retaining one of his weapons in-hand, Nightwolf raises his tomahawk and strikes the colossus with lightning, yet yielding little damage to consider. Luckily, Nightwolf returns to his feet in time to continue the battle. His eyes are locked onto his opponent, and he immediately tries a different approach; mounting the machine and try to smash the head. The Tekunin machine shakes violently, giving Nightwolf a difficult time trying to wreck the wiring. Ultimately, this strategy fails, and the Tekunin machine grabs and tosses the Apache warrior into a crate of wood, causing the boxes to smash and shatter, and he groans in pain from the damage sustained. Sonya Blade and Hotaru are crossed by the third Tekunin Sentinel and are left with nothing to do. Hotaru tries firing one of his fireballs at the obscenity, but with no avail. Luckily, Kenshi manages to warp just in time to divert the enemy, allowing the two to continue fleeing. Kenshi is smacked by the enormous arm of the third Tekunin Sentinel and pursues them. Sub-Zero fortunately manages to swoop in time and create an ice-trail to slide with ease and defend Sonya Blade and Hotaru as they make their escape. Sub-Zero summons as much as his cryomatic abilities allow, determined to freeze the colossus solid, and much to his relief, finds that his strategy is slowly working. Nightwolf, however, continues to get pummeled violently and is ultimately killed, whereas Kenshi manages to dodge a few attacks, yet sustaining much damage. The third Tekunin’s eyes glow a gold hue and breaks free from the frozen state Sub-Zero was trying so hard to place it in. It grasps Sub-Zero by the throat and its hands heat up, burning the former Lin Kuei warrior’s neck. Within moments, Sub-Zero’s head is lopped off and falls to the ground, where the Tekunin machine adds insult to injury, crushing his head with its massive foot.
BELL TOWER SECRET ROOM
Sonya Blade and Hotaru manage to find the room they were looking for, and they barricade the door shut. Sonya Blade quickly activates the technology she set up in the room for safety precautions while Hotaru lies on what appears to be a metal cot. Sonya Blade places a large metal brace around his forehead and it glows brightly.
“Just a few more seconds…”
The only thing standing between the barricaded door and the Tekunin now was the blind swordsman, Kenshi. He manages to put up fair fight for several moments, but he ultimately dies during the intervention. The first Tekunin that killed Nightwolf tries to smash the barricaded door open, making Sonya Blade uneasy. Hotaru groans slightly, the metallic brace still around his forehead. The barricaded door is smashed open and the Tekunin machines enter the room. All three’s eyes glow and illuminate the area, preparing to fire their beams. Sonya Blade, her face reflecting off the gold light, glares coldly at the machines.
The Tekunin fire their golden yellow rays, but all figures in the room immediately fade out, as if they never encountered each other at all…
TAVEN: (narrating) “So few of us left….”
4 INT. OIA BASE
The massive door that shields the hidden headquarters of what was the base of the Outerworld Investigation Agency opens, allowing entry for a large aircraft. The doors close once the aircraft lands safely, and the numerous survivors of Armageddon exit the ship, LIU KANG (human once more), JOHNNY CAGE, JAX, KITANA, TAVEN, and SMOKE. Nightwolf, Sub-Zero, Kenshi, Hotaru, and Sonya Blade are relieved to see their friends return safe and sound. The remaining members of the forces of light form a circle.
SONYA BLADE: “You made it.”
TAVEN: “Jackson Briggs received your distress call. We were concerned for your safety.”
SONYA BLADE: (surprised to see Liu Kang human) “Liu Kang?”
LIU KANG: “Lord Taven. He restored my body and soul.”
“So what happened?”
“It worked. I sent Hotaru a few days back in time to warn us of the attack. We wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for him.”
There is a brief moment of silence amongst the kombatants as they exchange looks of what almost appears to be the slightest spec of hope.
SONYA BLADE: “What?”
TAVEN: “...This just might work.”
Sonya does not utter a single word.
TAVEN: “According to Quan Chi, this whole ordeal was conceived 11 years ago, when Shinnok invaded Edenia.”
Taven grasps everyone’s attention, and a flashback follows accordingly to his words.
TAVEN: “The former Elder God knew that the only way to the heavens was through my home, Edenia. But he was after more than just vengeance against the Elder Gods. He was looking for an artifact that predates his own, the Eye of Rasal. I knew of it. It existed before I was rendered unconscious and obligated with the quest. The matter as to how he obtained the Eye is unknown, but it seems likely that he knew of the coming of Armageddon before any of us did. He managed to undo my plans of stabilizing the realms, and sowed chaos and discord.”
KITANA: “The Eye of Rasal belonged to the Edenian God of War… He encased it somewhere beyond our reach when he was defeated. How did Shinnok--”
“Someone must have told him beforehand.”
“He sold this realm to the Tekunin…. Generously handed my realm to Rain... and Outworld to Reiko.”
“And mine to the cleric of chaos, Havik.”
“I don’t understand as to why would he do this.”
“It is all part of his scheme. Our world is doomed. He is allowing them to sow as much destruction and discord as possible, to hasten Armageddon. With the eye in his possession, Shinnok will shield himself when reality shatters…. and will rebuild it under his own vision… as he had intended it. It all began there…. 11 years ago. If we could retrieve the Eye before he does, and somehow alter its function, the future will be secured.”
HOTARU: “And an end to this war…”
Sonya expresses no relief for the given solution, as she is overwhelmed by a slight problem.
SONYA BLADE: “T-This machine can send one back weeks…. Probably even months. But 11 years? There’s no telling if anyone could survive a trip like that. What you’re asking is too dangerous.”
LIU KANG: “As a spirit, I watched you all unwillingly serve the Dragon King’s will. The enigmatic warrior, Ermac, and I had worked together to free you all from his spell. Had you not partaken in the battle against the Deadly Alliance at Shang Tsung’s palace, none of you would have fallen. The moral of this is that no matter what happens, there’s always a solution. I believe that we can still survive this war, if we are willing to take risks, no matter how broad the spectrum is.”
Liu Kang, retaining a stern expression, shakes his head.
“You’re crazy. But it doesn’t look like we have a choice.”
The next few scenes involve characters such as Smoke and Sub-Zero leaving the OIA Base. Hotaru returns to his realm of Seido through bases’ techno portal.
KITANA: “Lord Taven? You will not return to Edenia?”
TAVEN: “I’m afraid not, Princess Kitana. This matter is far too important. Edenia will have to fare with their rightful Queen, now.”
“My mother…. and Jade.”
TAVEN: “Their deaths will not go unavenged. Lead an exodus, save as many lives as you can. Our best hope now lies in Liu Kang.”
Kitana turns her head to Liu Kang, standing at the side of the metal bed. She quickly approaches him, locking her eyes onto his.
KITANA: (placing her hand on his cheek) “Liu Kang…”
LIU KANG: (speaking softly) “I will look for you in the past.”
“This is a chance not only for everyone, but for the both of us to rectify our errors.”
Liu Kang gives Kitana a slight nod, who backs away slowly then turns to walk into the techno portal, which finally closes after she leaves the OIA Base. Liu Kang then returns to the matter at hand, still bearing a hint of dire concern on his face.
“How will this proceed?”
TAVEN: “I wasn’t present 11 years ago. Your realm’s gods…. Find Raiden and Fujin. Convince them of…. all this.”
Liu Kang turns to Taven.
TAVEN: “Liu Kang, you’re going to have to do for your mentors what they once did for you.”
LIU KANG: “Then this is it….”
Immediately jumps into the next cutscene where Liu Kang lying on the metal bed, his hands and legs bound by leather straps to prevent any involuntary movements or spasms. Taven, folding his arms, watches as Sonya Blade places the same metal brace she once used on Hotaru on Liu Kang's forehead. Liu Kang takes a few deep breathes, shaking off the nervousness.
“Try to be as calm as possible. If you aren’t, your mind might slip from past to present randomly.”
LIU KANG: “....And what do I do if matters go horribly wrong?”
SONYA BLADE: (shrugging)
“I don't know. Think about Kitana.”
LIu Kang frowns slightly at what he perceives as mockery.
“Any pleasant news to share?”
“Well, you’re the champion of Mortal Kombat. So you’re body doesn’t age and you’ll pretty much look the same.”
TAVEN: “This is it. I have faith in you, Liu Kang. We all faith in you.”
SONYA BLADE: “Ready?”
Liu Kang takes one final deep breath and nods.
SONYA BLADE: “Hold still…. This might hurt a little.”
Liu Kang has no time to allow that final sentence to sink in, as his mind is suddenly ruptured by the machine’s sharp grip. Liu Kang screams loudly as his eyes shut tighter than they ever have before…. He is soldiering through the searing pain inflicted upon him in seconds without warning.
5 INT. AMERICAN HOTAL – DAWN
Liu Kang gasps and opens his eyes once more, finding himself in a bed at an American hotel at dawn. He hesitantly looks out the window, and hears the cars beeping at the streets, the sun rising from the distant hills.
“By the Elder Gods….”
He slowly inspects his hands, still incredulous by the transfer. Despite the mild headache he was currently receiving, Liu Kang thoroughly remembers everything at the moment, and something in his mind snaps.
Liu Kang knocks on the door of the room next to his. The door opens, revealing KAI, an old friend of Liu Kang’s.
“Liu Kang…? What is goin--”
“Hurry. We need to return to the shaolin temples.”
“But I thought we weren’t going until--”
LIU KANG: “I will tell you on the way. Pack your things!”
Kai gives off a muddled facial expression, completely lost by the situation, but adheres to Liu Kang’s words and closes the door.
CHAPTER 1: JOHNNY CAGE
6 EXT. HEAVENS – DAY
Opening from a birds-eye view of the heavens, we move closer to the spirit of Johnny Cage, who resides here, RAIDEN, and Fujin. All three seem to be in a debate.
JOHNNY CAGE: “I’m telling you, he’s coming back with a vengeance. I saw everything from here. In the Netherrealm… What they’re plotting.”
RAIDEN: “This is a most unfortunate turn of events…”
FUJIN: “And you are certain this is true?”
“You think I would’ve told you if it wasn’t this important?”
Fujin glances at Raiden.
“Shall I inform the forces of light of this threat?”
“No, Fujin. Remain here at the side of your fellow deities and prepare them. Once Johnny Cage has been restored, I will unite the forces of light and we will plan our next objective.”
Fujin bows his head slightly and flies off. Raiden and Johnny Cage exchange looks once more.
“I’m not exactly sure why, but he’s after Kitana’s world first. Then he’s coming here. Why bother going after--”
RAIDEN: “The only possible route to the heavens is through the realm of Edenia. But I suspect….”
“It is of no importance, as of now.”
“We gotta warn the Edenians!”
“In time, Johnny Cage. Above all, we should proceed with bringing you back to the mortal world.”
Raiden's hands flash with sparks of electricity and fires it at Johnny Cage’s spirit. The contact results in Cage screaming in pain, and teleporting him out of the heavens. Raiden looks off into the skies, pondering on what he had neglected to mention to Johnny Cage.
7 EXT. THE WATERFRONT – DAY
Lightning strikes the waters from the skies, and in an instant, Johnny Cage teleports to the edge of the concrete floor, his body smoking from the restoration. He groans from the intense transfer and peers over to his reflection in the water.
“Looks like I didn't change a bit.”
He exerts little effort to stand on two feet and begins to examine his new body.
JOHNNY CAGE: “Woah. This is going to take some time to get used to.”
MALE VOICE: “The blurred vision will pass as well.”
Startled, Johnny Cage turns around, only to notice that the voice came from Shinnok's general, REIKO!
“How did you--”
REIKO: “Precautions. Aren’t they a life-saver? You should know.”
“I know who you’re working for, but I don’t have time for this.”
Johnny Cage walks towards Reiko to give him a shove. It was a foolish act of underestimation, as Reiko sidekicks him, causing Johnny Cage to stagger back a bit, but assume a fighting stance.
“Make that time!”
A fight commences.
Reiko, humiliated, quickly returns to his feet and opens a portal back to the Netherrealm. Johnny doesn’t pursue him, knowing that following him into the wretched planes of Hell would be suicide. Barely exhausted from the fight, Cage glances around the arena, slowly becoming familiar with his surroundings as his vision clears further.
JOHNNY CAGE: (surprised)
“Didn’t I die here?”
Before he is able to do anything else, Cage is visited by a few passing bystanders attracted to the loud kombat that ensued.
“What the… Johnny Cage?!”
CIVILIAN #2: “It’s Johnny Cage!”
The area quickly becomes loud and rowdy, as more civilians crowd the waterfront, eventually followed by paparazzi and news reporters. Johnny Cage becomes overwhelmed with the flashing of cameras at every angle and voices yelling, “He’s alive!!” and “Is this a hoax?!”.
“Wait! Hold up, now! Gah...”
Johnny Cage flees the scene and manages to successfully find a dark alley to avoid the crowd.
He pants slightly before being startled by footsteps approaching him. Cage immediately turns to the side and assumes a defensive stance, but only finds himself greeted by the sight of Liu Kang and Kai.
“Well, I guess some things don’t change.”
“Wait. Isn’t that Johnny Cage?”
JOHNNY CAGE: “...In the flesh.”
KAI: “Liu Kang, didn’t he die?”
JOHNNY CAGE: “Great. Another inquisitor. Liu Kang, who is this?”
“This is Kai. Kai, Johnny Cage. He helped us numerous times in the past.”
Kai extends his hand to the action star, who is reluctant at first, but eventually exchanges the greeting.
“Alright. Listen. We’re going to be in big trouble if we don’t act now.”
“I am well aware. Far more than you actually know.”
KAI: “You might find this hard to believe, but uhh…. Liu Kang is um…”
“I am from the future.”
Johnny Cage is horrendously confused.
JOHNNY CAGE: “....Um. Say again?”
“I have been sent here. 11 years from now.”
JOHNNY CAGE: (chuckle)
“Yeah. And yesterday, I was fucking Santa Clause.”
Liu Kang, folding his arms, gives no response.
JOHNNY CAGE: “C’mon, Liu Kang. I find that very hard to believe.”
“That fall from the heavens must have been more severe than I thought.”
“Cage. You informed Raiden and Fujin of the coming of this war. Fujin returned to the Elder Gods while Raiden restored your body and soul.”
JOHNNY CAGE: “Wait… How did you kno--”
LIU KANG: “A few minutes from now, you would’ve already told me this. I know it may seem quite unlikely, but I ensure you that I am telling you nothing but the truth.”
Johnny Cage allows Liu Kang’s words of reassurance to sink in.
“You know what? … I’ve seen way too much to think anything is impossible at this point. So uhhh… ‘future’ Liu Kang?”
LIU KANG: “To be perfectly frank, all will be better explainable if I just locate the information I require. We are going to Seido, the realm of Order. I need to search their libraries for something vastly important. We don’t have much time before Shinnok invades Edenia. We must make haste, for we only have a couple days.”
JOHNNY CAGE: “Wait…”
JOHNNY CAGE: “I need sunglasses.”
8 INT. LIBRARY OF ORDER – DAY
The next cutscene opens in on Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Kai entering the Library of Order. They are approached by the librarian, MISS BISHOP.
“Greetings. Welcome to Seido, travelers. What brings you to this place?”
“We are from Earthrealm. My name is Liu Kang. These are my friends, Johnny Cage…”
JOHNNY CAGE: (swaying his hand) “‘Sup?”
LIU KANG: “....and Kai.”
Kai gives a shaolin bow.
“We are searching for a book on Edenian lore. On ancient artifacts and such. Would you happen to point the way for us?”
“Absolutely. Right this way, please.”
Miss Bishop turns around and wanders off further in the library. Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Kai follow her.
“This place is pretty clean and organized.”
“The people of Seido prize structure and order above all else. And they enforce their laws with an iron fist. So keep quiet, and listen to my instructions very closely, unless you want to end up unjustly imprisoned in a Seidan jail.”
Kai’s eyes widen slightly, struck by Liu Kang’s words of warning.
“Here it is…”
The librarian stops by an organized isle of books and sways her hand to the side, her lips curling into a wrinkly smile.
MISS BISHOP: “If you require anything else, I will be at my desk. And please, do keep the volume at a minimum.”
Liu Kang bows before the librarian wanders off.
“Look around for anything on Edenian jewels or magical artifacts. I know they have something.”
The three split up and search every shelf. Johnny Cage begins scanning multiple books, one in each hand. Kai seems to be doing the complete opposite, carefully inspecting the cover of each tome one by one. Liu Kang begins muttering the name of the artifact to himself, quietly, barely noticeable for anyone to hear. Within a few moments, Johnny Cage slowly cups his hands by his mouth and calls quietly.
“Liu Kang! Liu Kang!”
LIU KANG: (peering over the side)
“What is it?”
JOHNNY CAGE: “Could you be a little more specific?”
Their whispers are suddenly interrupted by 3 seidan guards who enter the library, accompanied by their leader, Hotaru. One of the guards locate and point to them.
SEIDAN GUARD #1: “There!”
Liu Kang, Kai, and Johnny Cage assemble side by side as HOTARU and the Seidan Guards approach them.
HOTARU: “You three. You are newcomers, are you not?”
“Under the authority of the Seidan law, I must place you three under arrest.”
“We just got here!”
HOTARU: “Yes, you did… without undergoing an identification check and customs.”
“Apologies, commander Hotaru. We are new to this realm and unfamiliar with the laws here.”
“Ignorance is not an excuse. With recent terrorist threats and undercover assassins from foreign realms running amok here, we are forced to take wise precautions.”
LIU KANG: “Please… Allow us to ex--”
“You’re coming with us.” (turning to his guards) “Take them to custody.”
9 EXT. LIBRARY OF ORDER ENTRANCE - DAY
The 3 seidan guards escort Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Kai out of the library to outside at the entrance. It didn’t take long for the three kombatants to strike the lawmen down with ease, enraging Hotaru further.
HOTARU: “Stop right there, criminal scum!”
“I’m sorry, but we need you to understand!”
Hotaru gives no regard for Liu Kang’s pleas and goes on the offensive. Johnny Cage intervenes on Liu Kang’s behalf, throwing a shadow kick to Hotaru’s stomach, staggering the commander back.
HOTARU: “You will never see the light of day.”
A fight commences.
Johnny Cage maintains his defensive fighting stance as Hotaru returns to his feet. He signals 10 more of his guards to fight in his stead.
Before they make their move, an explosion from within the library catches their attention. Their eyes all widen in horror at the sight of the destruction unfolding next to them.
Hotaru gestures his guards to immediately enter the building and rescue any civilians trapped within. Liu Kang returns his attention to Hotaru.
“Please! Allow us to lend aid!”
HOTARU: “You stay here! For all I know, you three could have plotted this!”
In the heat of the argument, Johnny Cage dashes into the burning structure and leaves everyone else behind.
10 INT. BURNING LIBRARY OF ORDER - DAY
Inside the incinerating fire, he looks around to rescue any civilians caught in the blaze. Johnny finds three, recognizing their screams from the distance, and escorts them to safety out of the building. Before he can look for more, a crate of burning wood is thrown at him, and Johnny flies back several feet. The attacker reveals himself as HAVIK, the cleric of chaos.
HAVIK: “Another ‘hero’ caught in my web.”
Johnny Cage quickly dusts the shattered planks of wood off of him and gets back up, driven by sheer anger.
JOHNNY CAGE: “You caught the wrong animal.”
A fight commences.
Havik finds himself unconscious, and Johnny Cage begins to notice the building crumble. Midst the catastrophic situation, he discovers a crying child hiding in the corner. Johnny Cage quickly grabs her and dashes for the exit.
11 EXT. LIBRARY OF ORDER ENTRANCE - DAY
He is quick enough to reach the door and sprint to safety before the whole building collapses onto the floor from the intense fire. Seidan soldiers rush to lend aid, dousing the flames with hoses of water as Johnny Cage groans, returning the child to her mother. Hotaru, Liu Kang, and Kai approach him.
JOHNNY CAGE: (panting) “Give me a minute to breathe…”
HOTARU: “A commendable deed. My sincerest apologies to the three of you. I mistook you for one of Darrius’ undercover insurgents.”
JOHNNY CAGE: (panting)
“Do their faces look half-mutilated?”
Under the Library’s rubble, Havik bursts out, ushering a loud yell. The roar catches everyone's attention, including Hotaru’s whose eyes widen in anger.
Hotaru dashes after the fleeing cleric, Havik, as Liu Kang, Kai, and Johnny Cage slowly return to their objective.
KAI: “Everything is burned.”
The three begin to scour the mess of books piled onto each other. Most of them are either incinerated by the flames or torn and ruined. Only a few of them remain in fair condition.
LIU KANG: “We won’t be able to do anything here, now.”
Liu Kang’s words hold no truth, as Johnny Cage drops to a knee and moves a few charred remains, he discovers a book bearing the likeness of an eye-shaped jewel on the cover.
Kai and Liu Kang, their attentions grasped, rush to Johnny Cage. They, too, are mesmerized by what they discover.
LIU KANG: “Wait. This is it.”
Liu Kang gently picks the book from the rubble and skims through the pages with Johnny Cage and Kai watching from the sides.
“That’s what we’re looking for?”
“Yes. Now we what and where it is… The Eye of Rasal.”
12 INT. SHINNOK’S THRONE ROOM - DAY
SHINNOK sits boldly sits upon his throne. The great doors open as QUAN CHI and Reiko enter the spire, walking side-by-side. They bow before their lord, who eagerly listens for progress in their objectives.
REIKO: “Lord Shinnok. It is with great regret that I inform you of Johnny Cage’s continuing existence. I have… underestimated our foe. Fortunately, I have devised an alternative means of completing my task; I have monitored his movements. He and his allies were traveling to the realm of Order”
“Reiko believes they are looking for the Eye.”
Shinnok rises from his throne and sways his hand upward.
The two obediently stand, folding their hands behind their backs as Shinnok approaches them.
SHINNOK: “An unfortunate turn of events. I will decide your fate later, Reiko. You are dismissed.”
Reiko bows his head and hastily walks out of the spire, afraid to invoke Shinnok’s wrath. The great doors close and the fallen elder god angrily turns and fires a burgundy-hued beam at one of his guards, sending them flying out of the spire with a loud yell. Quan Chi stands perfectly still, retaining an emotionless visage.
SHINNOK: “All my plans….”
QUAN CHI: “Lord Shinnok. If I may, perhaps I could divert them? Or begin the invasion early?”
SHINNOK: “No matter. As you said, we will schedule the invasion earlier than expected. Only, I alone, hold the secret to the Eye.”
Shinnok holds up and examines what he believes to be his amulet.
SHINNOK: “The only artifact that exceeds the power of my own.”
QUAN CHI: “Forgive me for asking, my lord: What is so important about this ‘Eye of Rasal’?”
Shinnok turns back to Quan Chi, a devilish smirk on his face.
SHINNOK: “Do you know of the Edenian God of War?”
QUAN CHI: “I cannot say I do, my liege.”
“Of course you don’t. His name and existence are but now retained in ancient Edenian history archives and fables. He was a powerful and admirable deity in his own right. He discovered a prophecy that in which the fabric of all the realms would be torn apart by the fury of Mortal Kombat. To ensure that such a disaster would destroy all but him, he created an artifact of his own, with magical properties nearly on par with that of the six Kamidogu.”
QUAN CHI: “What happened to the Edenian God?”
SHINNOK: “His whereabouts are honestly unknown. But one thing is for certain; before I can have my revenge against the Elder Gods, the Eye must be secured in my hands. Lore holds that he left it heavily guarded in his temple when he perished.”
QUAN CHI: “As leader of the Brotherhood of Shadow, I will ensure your goals come to fruition.”
“We must make haste. Go now and find the Ambassador’s daughter. We will need her.”
QUAN CHI: “Very well, my lord. It shall be done, immediately.”
Quan Chi bows his head before exiting the spire, allowing Shinnok to return to his throne, his mind fogged with thoughts of his own future.
CHAPTER 2: SONYA BLADE
13 INT. OUTERWORLD INVESTIGATION AGENCY BASE - DAY
Sonya and Jax are seen working their duties. Their techno portal opens up and Raiden intently watches from a distance, folding his arms.
JAX: “Well, Raiden. We did it. Our very first human-made portal. Guess we didn’t need any magic after all.”
RAIDEN: “Impressive. I never doubted you two.”
SONYA BLADE: “Alright. So hopefully, this portal will take us to Edenia. You’ll join us, will you?”
RAIDEN: “Yes. Eventually, of course. For now, I must return to the heavens and implore the Elder Gods to prepare. They won’t seem to acknowledge the pleas of a mortal.”
SONYA BLADE: “So is it really true? That Johnny’s...”
Raiden gives a subtle nod.
(placing a bag around his shoulder)
Sonya grabs her own bag and straps it around her shoulder, looking back at Raiden and giving him a thumbs up.
RAIDEN: “I will look for you in Edenia.”
Raiden raises his hand in the air, and teleports from the base in a flash of lightning. Sonya turns her head back into the portal, standing side-by-side with Jax.
JAX: “Afraid we’ll be torn apart?”
“We made it. What’s there to be afraid of?”
JAX: “A horrible accident? You know how dangerous these wormholes are.”
“You worry too much, Jax.”
JAX: “I’m not worrying.”
Sonya inhales deeply and exhales before she and Jax simultaneously walk into the techno portal, which immediately closes after they leave the base.
14 EXT. EDENIAN CAMPS - DUSK
The portal to Edenia opens, but only Sonya Blade seems to emerge. She finds herself in the outskirts of the realm without her partner, Jax.
SONYA BLADE: (whispering) “Shit…”
She immediately presses a button on her wrist comm and picks up her partner’s call.
SONYA BLADE: “Jax? Jax?”
JAX: (static) “We’ve been obviously sent to different locations. Looks like the portal still needs some work. I’m at one of the villages.”
SONYA BLADE: “Alright. Stay where you are and I’ll lock on to your signal. Once we’ll meet up we’ll--”
Sonya hears murmuring in the distance.
“Shhh… Something’s come up. I’ll get back to you, later. Sonya out.”
Her wrist comm beeps as she hides behind a large boulder, peering slightly from a safe distance. She notices many new faces at the camped area. One of which being a dark-skinned woman in a leotard, TANYA. She orders her hooded colleagues to leave the camp and keep watch, an order in which they obediently carry out. With them gone, Sonnya utilizes this moment to her advantage, approaching the unsuspecting Tanya with her pistol in-hand, ready to take defensive measures should things go south.
SONYA BLADE: “Hold! Who are you?”
Tanya turns around and boldly glances at the Special Forces agent. She gives off a sly smirk before vanishing in a flash of flames. Sonya looks around in awe, only to be struck in the back of the head by Tanya. Fortunately, Sonya manages to recover from the assault, but unfortunately drops her pistol in the process. She assumes a fighting stance as Tanya approaches her.
SONYA BLADE: “I don’t know who you are… But you’re coming with me.”
A fight commences.
Tanya groans, returning to her feet. She angrily charges at a readied Sonya, only before being crossed and intervened by RAIN, who appears in a burst of water before her. Rain throws a round-house kick to Tanya’s jaw, knocking the Edenian ambassador off her feet. Rain throws another kick to the head while she’s on ground, knocking her out cold.
SONYA BLADE: “Rain?!”
RAIN: (turning to Sonya) “Surprised to see me yet again, Sonya Blade?”
SONYA BLADE: “Why did you help me?”
RAIN: “You honestly expect me to continue serving that sorry excuse for an emperor? After what Kitana told me?”
SONYA BLADE: “After all the trouble you caused, it’s going to take a lot more than an assist for me trust you!”
A fight commences.
Rain returns to his feet while Sonya still retains a defensive fighting stance.
Their kombat has caused quite a stir. The hooded guards rush to the source of the sounds, finding Sonya Blade and Rain standing by the camp. Before they could attack, Rain quickly bear-hugs Sonya, causing them both to teleport in a burst of water.
15 EXT. THE TEMPLE OF RASAL - DUSK
They reappear in the Temple of Rasal. Rain releases Sonya Blade, who staggers back slightly.
SONYA BLADE: “What did--”
She could not continue her question, as the sight of massive temple in the heart of the forest grasps her attention. Rain stands next her.
“Woah. This is new.”
RAIN: “This temple houses an artifact that is powerful beyond our comprehension. After I left Shao Kahn, I began wandering Edenia, searching for clues and details of my past. After that failed, I traveled to Seido in hopes of learning more about Edenia’s monarchs through books, only to find the library burned down. I would have left, if not catching sight of your friends.”
That last word catches Sonya off guard, and she immediately turns her head to Rain.
SONYA BLADE: “Who was there?”
RAIN: “Liu Kang and two others. One of them donning eye-wear.”
SONYA BLADE: “Johnny….”
JOHNNY CAGE: (voice) “Somebody called us?”
Sonya and Rain look off to the side, noticing Liu Kang, Kai, and Johnny Cage approaching them.
SONYA BLADE: “Well, this is unexpected.”
LIU KANG: “Kai, Sonya Blade. Sonya, Kai.”
The two exchange handshakes.
RAIN: “Your group has been assembled. Now fulfill your end of the bargain.”
Liu Kang quietly pulls out a large scroll and hands it to Rain.
RAIN: “I trust this was worth my trouble.”
The four watch as Rain wanders off with the scroll in-hand.
“What did you give him?”
“It’s not important. Contact Jackson Briggs.”
“Woah. Woah. Wait a second. I have no idea what is going on here.”
LIU KANG: “Please. I will explain once we have all gathered together.”
Sonya presses a button on her wrist comm, contacting Jax.
JAX: (static) “Sonya!”
SONYA BLADE: “Jax, I’m fine. I’m actually here with Liu Kang.”
JAX: (static) “Liu Kang? Wait. What’s going on?”
“Quick. Change of plans. You lock on to my signal and meet us here. Don’t delay.”
“Alright. Just wait until…. Oh. You’re not too far. Should be there in about… half an hour. Stay where you guys are.”
SONYA BLADE: “Understood. Sonya out.”
The wrist comm beeps, and SONYA continues to scan the walls of the ancient temple along with Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Kai.
SONYA BLADE: “This should be interesting.”
CHAPTER 3: SUB-ZERO
16 EXT. MOUNTAINS NEAR THE TEMPLE OF THE ELEMENTS - DUSK
An icy pathway is pointing towards the fabled temple of elements. KUAI LIANG is at one knee, staring at it from a distance. Much to his surprise, he finds the temple empty and abandoned.
SUB-ZERO: “What is the temple of the elements?”
The spirit of the Elder Sub-Zero, Bi-Han, appears kneeling next to him.
ELDER SUB-ZERO: “The Temple of the Elements exists to protect Shinnok’s sacred amulet, the amulet that keeps him trapped in the Netherrealm. It is protected by the four elements --- wind, earth, water, and fire. As long as the amulet remains on Earth, Shinnok cannot escape the Netherrealm.”
The spirit of the elder Sub-Zero disappears. Kuai Liang looks down at his mask, the one his brother wore long ago during his service to the Lin Kuei.
SUB-ZERO: “What has happened here, brother? I came here to make peace with the gods of the elements that you fought, but they’re all gone. The temple is unguarded.”
Kuai Liang dons his mask before looking up to the stars, noticing a meteorite-like object soar through the dusky skies. His eyes narrow through the slit of his mask, eager to investigate.
17 EXT. THE TEMPLE OF RASAL - NIGHT
Jax tries pounding the door of the temple several times with his bionic arms, but with no avail. He takes a minute to breathe. Liu Kang, crossing his arms, shakes his head in disapproval.
SONYA: “Jax, forget it.”
JAX: “Just when I thought we could get around without all this sorcery stuff.”
“The Eye isn’t going anywhere. It’s secured by a magical barrier beyond this door. We will return here, later. I only asked us to assemble here so could learn and bookmark its location.”
SONYA BLADE: “Done.”
LIU KANG: “Alright. At last. Why don’t you all go the city? Where the palace is?”
“I could use my wrist portal to teleport us all there but… You won’t come with us?”
“My job isn’t over. I need to look for Sub-Zero. He’ll be a valuable asset in our plight.”
“I’ll come with you. Just in case things get too rocky.”
JAX: “In that case…”
Jax extends his hand over to Liu Kang, offering his wrist portal mechanism.
“Sonya’s already got one. And you’ll need it, since you’re going places.”
Liu Kang takes it, nodding.
LIU KANG: “I promise we won’t be long.”
Liu Kang slides the watch through his wrist and presses the appropriate button, allowing him and Johnny Cage to safely teleport out of Edenia. Jax and Sonya exchange looks.
“This future stuff he’s going on about… Do you believe any of it?”
JAX: “I don’t know. But I sure as hell hope it’s worth all this…”
18 EXT. LIVING FOREST - NIGHT
Sub-Zero wanders the Living Forest in solitude, pondering on what his brother had told him regarding the temple of elements. His focus is broken, as a familiar presence grasps his attention.
In a burst of flames, SCORPION comes in with a teleport kick to Sub-Zero’s jaw. The former Lin Kuei warrior falls to his back as Scorpion reappears, armed and ready for kombat. Sub-Zero returns to his feet, maintaining defensive stance.
SUB-ZERO: “What are you doing? You vowed to protect me as restitution for killing my brother!”
SCORPION: “You lying snake. Quan Chi has told me the truth. You, too, condoned in the massacre of my clan and family.”
“You are mistaken!”
SCORPION: “There is no mistake. Vengeance will be mine!”
A fight commences.
Scorpion, fueled by vengeance, returns to his feet and dashes towards a readied Sub-Zero. But Scorpion is crossed; Liu Kang appears just in time to deliver a flying kick to Scorpion’s head. Johnny Cage arrives shortly after. The Shirai-Ryu ninja manages to glance at the three only once before dashing away in a flash of hell fire.
“I had it under control.”
JOHNNY CAGE: “We know you did, Frosty.”
“There isn’t much time. Come with me.”
“Wait… I know secrets regarding Shinnok’s amulet.”
LIU KANG: “Don’t worry about the amulet. Quan Chi took it and won’t plan on returning it to his master anytime soon. We have another objective to complete.”
“I know many things that stretch as far as 11 years, Kuai Liang, including your deceased brother’s identity.”
Brief silence. Sub-Zero’s eyes narrow.
SUB-ZERO: “....Who are you?”
19 INT. REPTILE’S LAIR
KHAMELEON, future matron of the Zaterran race, inspects the Saurian-like designs on the walls of Reptile’s Lair. Rain arrives shortly after, his presence hooking Khameleon’s attention.
RAIN: “It is done. I have learned my true heritage. To think… I would be the bastard son of Argus.”
“The sshhhaolin monk proved ussssseful, it sssseeems.”
“That is not all. Thanks to our Earthrealm friend, I have discovered the location of your fellow Saurian, Reptile.”
KHAMELEON: (surprised) “Where?!”
RAIN: “The Edenian Palace, awaiting his trial. I’d be careful if I were you.”
KHAMELEON: “You two have learned the pricccce of ssserving Shhhao Kahn. I musssst go now and inform him of the true fate of our raccce. Our temporary deal hassss exxxpired. Farewell, Rain.”
Khameleon hastily leaves the lair, with Rain still standing in the center of the arena, feeling empowered by a sense of superiority.
Rain: “Farewell… Peasant.”
20 EXT. ARKTIKA - DAY
Snow rains upon Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Sub-Zero as they continue trekking across the snowy blankets of Arktika.
SUB-ZERO: “So it’s true. Bi-Han really has become nothing more than a shadow of his former self. I knew it was only a matter of time before his service to the Lin Kuei would bring him to a lower level.”
“There is a still a chance to save him. 9 years later, you, Sareena, and Smoke will restore him. Although, it will not come without cost.”
“Smoke? So he is alive.”
“At some point after Shinnok’s defeat, you secure the Lin Kuei clan from Sektor, and begin a new era. You will become grandmaster and will succeed in training numerous initiates.”
Sub-Zero is silent, awed by information of the future from Liu Kang.
LIU KANG: “Hm?”
“You said when my brother returned, it was not without cost…”
LIU KANG: “What is it you fear?”
“What is my future?”
Liu Kang is silent, staring helplessly at Kuai Liang, who eagerly awaits an answer.
Future Sub-Zero is seen pursuing the former Lin Kuei, FROST. She pants heavily, eager to outrun Sub-Zero. Distracted, Frost fails to notice the steep edge and slips, falling deep into the Ice Pit. She groans in pain as she tries to stand. Sub-Zero jumps into the pit, not wanting to harm the ice vixen.
THE ICE PIT
SUB-ZERO: “Frost! Enough! I am not here to incite violence. Just hear me out!”
FROST: (holding her injured arm) “After what your brother did, you expect me to listen to you?!”
“I am not my brother! Please! Look around you! There’s barely any of us left! Smoke is gone, corrupted! In these times of disorder, we must stay united.”
FROST: “No. With him out of the way, the Lin Kuei will be mine!”
A fight commences.
Frost, grievously wounded, fails to return to her feet. Sub-Zero approaches her and drops to a knee beside her, inspected the bloodied arm. Frost cowers slightly, still paranoid of Sub-Zero’s intentions.
SUB-ZERO: “Ease down.”
He places one of his hands on Frost's arm, the contact resulting in an icy equivalent to a cauterizer. Frost winces a bit from the pain, but finds that the treatment actually prevented further blood loss. Sub-Zero grabs her by the other arm and pulls her back to her feet. Frost, speechless, continues to inspect her treated appendage.
SUB-ZERO: (soft and subtle tone)
“How are you feeling?”
FROST: “Why did you do this?”
“You honestly think I would kill off another member of my own kind? A fellow cryomancer? My brother is dead. You and I are the only ones left in the world.”
“What do you want me to do?”
SUB-ZERO: “Join me. I need someone to help me find Smoke. His programming has been corrupted, somehow. The Tekunin must have got to him. After that, we will regroup with the forces of light.”
Frost takes a moment to make her decision, her first thoughts declining. But eventually, her consciousness gets to her, and she ultimately decides it would only be proper to honor her gratitude to one of her own blood.
FROST: “As you said, we’re the only ones left. Why make it worse?”
21 EXT. MOUNTAINS OF CHINA – NIGHT
Jax, using his high-powered binoculars, scans the environment for any signs of Tekunin ambush. Fortunately, there are no threats nearby, and he puts them away. Jax returns to his colleagues, who seem to be camping around a fire.
JOHNNY CAGE: “I feel like a caveman.”
Everyone is dead silent. Nightwolf and Kenshi sit with their legs crossed, and appear to be looking down and meditating.
JAX: “No signs of them anywhere.”
“I really hope Liu Kang knows what he is doing.”
JAX: “Same here.” (sits besides Johnny Cage)
“Just imagine… What it’s like. Going back to the good old days.”
JOHNNY CAGE: “I hear you.”
JAX: “If this actually works. If this nightmare ceases, then…. we’ll have a future. All of us. For once, I’m actually placing my utter faith in someone.”
JOHNNY CAGE: “Remember what I said? Two years ago?”
Jax turns his head to the side to Johnny Cage
“That little speech you gave us?”
JOHNNY CAGE: “Yeah. ‘It used to be, when there was a threat to Earthrealm, that Raiden would rally the Forces of Light to face the enemy in Mortal Kombat. Somehow he could always discover the truth behind the deception. I was one of his allies and fought with him against the Forces of Darkness. In those early days Liu Kang was the point man, he was the star. The rest of us played supporting roles, clearing the way so he could take on the main threat. But times have changed. Raiden has abandoned us. He's become darker, using more ruthless ways to keep the "peace." And Liu Kang was killed. Though his spirit is still around to help us, eventually he'll pass on into the Heavens. It seems like we have no clear leader. We're just not the fighting force we once were. We're scattered all over the realms. Maybe it's because there hasn't been a real threat since we took care of the Dragon King, I don't know. But I can't help but feel uneasy about the future. I used to think, "What if there's a new threat? Who's gonna lead us?" With Raiden gone, how would we even tell when something bad is about to happen?’ Man, I'm surprised I remember that word for word.”
JAX: “Raiden. I wonder if Fujin is still over that.”
KENSHI: “Only one way to find out.”
Johnny Cage and Jax turn their heads to Kenshi, who rises to his feet after meditation.
KENSHI: “We’re going to him and seek his help. We can’t hold the Tekunin off without him.”
“We’d give you points for originality, if we hadn’t tried that, first thing.”
“Trust me. With this future-past business going on right now, he will.”
22 EXT. WIND WORLD - NIGHT
The wind howls through the crisp air of Fujin’s domain, Wind World. Jax, Johnny Cage, Nightwolf, and Kenshi wander the arena, looking around the skies.
JOHNNY CAGE: “Fujin! Fujin!” (whispers) “God dammit…”
“Try to be a little sympathetic. You know the guy has been through a lot. Understand if he doesn’t want to help us.”
“Fujin! We need your help!”
NIGHTWOLF: “Yaponcha! Fujin!”
Their calls go unanswered, only the sound of gusting wind heeds their calls.
“Forget it, guys. He’s not worth it.”
Before they turn to leave, a sudden gust of hurricane-like winds circulate, and eventually dissipate as the God of Wind, Fujin, appears. Fujin appears far more in a physical state of mess than ever. His hair hangs in his face while strands of hair from his long and white ponytail protrude.
(weary and depressed tone)
“What in the name of the Elder Gods do you want?”
“We need your help.”
“I have told you already that I am no longer--”
FUJIN: “No. You’re all fools. You think you can win this petty war! Shinnok has planted the seeds of destruction and all you can helplessly do is watch as his plan sprouts from the soil of this doomed world.”
Fujin turns to leave, only to be stopped by Jax.
JAX: “Wait! We know. That’s why we’re bringing good news. Sonya’s time machine construct was a success. We managed to send Liu Kang back into the past. We have a chance to bring this nightmare to an end! But we need your help to keep buy us some time! Please…”
Fujin continues to stare depressingly at his former comrades for several seconds, before finally shaking his head in disbelief and disappearing in a gust of wind.
KENSHI: “So much for our plan.”
NIGHTWOLF: “What happened to him?”
Everyone turns to Nightwolf, surprised to see him unaware of Fujin's lack of faith.
“You mean, you don’t know?”
Nightwolf shakes his head. While Johnny narrates, we see Fujin in the heavens, staring down upon the doomed Earth.
JOHNNY CAGE: “It’s a long story… After Armageddon ended, Raiden and Fujin were in a heated debate on Earth’s fate. Raiden really wanted a more oppressive approach to protecting Earth, while Fujin wanted the complete opposite. In the end, they battled it out. Defeating Raiden, watching the realms burn… I guess it was too much for him to bear.”
The Wind God sighs, tempted to consider Jax's pleas for help as he watches destruction unfold on earth from the heavens. Back down on Wind World, Johnny Cage, Jax, Kenshi, and Nightwolf decide to leave, finally accepting Fujin's silence, only to be visited by the wind god once more.
FUJIN: “Very well… as much as I don’t want to help you in this plan of yours, I will see what I can do.”
23 INT. THE BELL TOWER - NIGHT
Barely any light manages to pour through cracks in the ceiling as Sub-Zero and Frost battle it out with Smoke. The two cryomancers seem to have discovered the cyborg in the Bell Tower, but is surprisingly holding his own in the fight. Frost freezes the floor which Smoke is standing upon, and he, too freezes in a block of ice, allowing Sub-Zero to tag in and deliver a punishing blow. Smoke's robotic appendages glitch a bit with involuntary movements and spasms briefly, before finally shutting off. Frost and Sub-Zero withdraw from their fighting stances and approach the cyborg.
“That was morbid.”
Frost stands uncomfortably close Smoke, who suddenly switches back online and unleashes an assault that sends the vixen flying back a few feet. Sub-Zero goes in and throws a sidekick, staggering Smoke a bit.
SUB-ZERO: “Tomas! Enough! You’ve been corrupted!”
“Tomas Vrbada is no longer relevant. I am Smoke.”
A fight commences.
Smoke begins glitching out horribly as Sub-Zero continues to assault him with punishing blows. Eventually, the cyborg shuts off once more, and Sub-Zero withdraws from his fighting stance once again, sighing in relief. He returns to Frost and helps her return to her feet.
“We did it.”
They cautiously approach Smoke, who is currently offline.
“Are you certain he can be saved?”
“Of course he can. I reprogrammed him once… During my darker years.”
He drops to one knee and recalibrates Smoke neural modulators as Frost watches from aside. Within several seconds, Smoke switches back online and arches his body upward, placing a hand on his forehead.
SUB-ZERO: “Tomas? Smoke? Can you hear me?”
The two finally stand up.
FROST: “How are you feeling?”
SMOKE: “I may need repairs. My body appears to be damaged.”
FROST: “You attacked us. We had no choice.”
SUB-ZERO: “It doesn’t matter. Once we return to Jax, we’ll have tools that-”
Their conversation is interrupted by a loud beep from Smoke’s wrist.
SUB-ZERO: “What is that?”
SMOKE: “No… Tekunin. They’re coming any second now.”
The three are nearly in a state of panic.
FROST: “You’ve contacted them?!”
Smoke looks off to the cracked ceiling, noticing a silhouette taking the form of a ship shadow over them. He turns back to his comrades.
SMOKE: “Go! Both of you! I’ll distract them!”
SUB-ZERO: “We are not leaving you!”
SMOKE: “I don’t recall this being up for debate!”
Two Tekunin Sentinels crash through the roof of the Bell Tower and walk towards their targets menacingly. Their golden yellow eyes flash and fire a blindingly bright ray, which would have incinerated Frost and Sub-Zero, had Smoke not pushed them out of the way. The two cryomancers tragically look at their fried and dying ally wince and glitch out as sparks of electricity circulate his metal body.
SMOKE: (distorted and breaking voice) “Go… Now.”
Sub-Zero and Frost reluctantly flee from the tower while Smoke activates his self-destruct button. The two Tekunin Sentinels become distracted by Smoke’s ticking. Within 10 seconds, Smoke detonates…
24 INT. SPECIAL FORCES JET
A sharp jolt strikes Fujin in the heart, as if feeling a casualty took place not too far.
JAX: “What is it?”
FUJIN: (depressed and weary)
“I can hear everything… Death and destruction everywhere on a scale beyond that which I can handle.”
CHAPTER 4: SCORPION
25 EXT. THE NETHERREALM - DAY
In the fiery pits of the Netherrealm, Quan Chi is seen practicing necromancy, conjuring skeletons of deceased warriors. Behind him, the ninja specter, Scorpion, appears and kneels.
SCORPION: “There was an intervention. The shaolin monk and the actor appeared. I was severely outnumbered.”
QUAN CHI: “Unfortunate. It seems the forces of light really are aware of our plans. No matter, we will invade this afternoon.”
“Quan Chi… I have but one question.”
Quan Chi turns around to Scorpion, listening eagerly as the undead warrior stands.
SCORPION: “Did this younger Sub-Zero truly take part in the massacre of the Shirai-Ryu?”
“In this realm, you were bred to serve. Not question, Scorpion. I have already informed you of the truth.”
SCORPION: “Of course…”
QUAN CHI: “Go now. Return to them. I need to know what else they know. Don’t get caught.”
SCORPION: “As you wish.”
Scorpion disappears from the Netherrealm. Quan Chi turns back around to complete his duties, yet bearing a hint of concern on his face. Concerned that Scorpion might one day find out the truth.
26 EXT. THE EDENIAN CAMPS - NIGHT
Liu Kang taps the wrist portal mechanism a few times. No avail.
“This isn’t working as it should.”
“We will have to travel to the palace by foot, now.”
JOHNNY CAGE: “That will take hours.”
Sub-Zero suddenly becomes alarmed by a nearby presence Johnny Cage and Liu Kang fail to notice. With a sway of his hand, he signals them to be quiet.
The cryomancer fires a beam of ice at the side, where Scorpion was hiding. The specter teleports kicks Liu Kang and Sub-Zero, which knock them to the ground. Johnny Cage assumes a fighting stance and prepares to kombat with the specter, who reappears in a flash of fire.
JOHNNY CAGE: “Still obsessed with vengeance?”
SCORPION: “You stand in my way.”
A fight commences.
Johnny Cage is down, but still conscious. Sub-Zero returns to his feet, only to be knocked to the floor by Scorpion swinging fist.
“What you are doing is unjust!”
SCORPION: “You are just like your brother, a filthy liar! You dishonor him by wearing his mantle.”
Scorpion raises his arms, and in a flash of hellfire, teleports both himself and Sub-Zero out of the camps.
27 INT. GORO’S LAIR
Scorpion and Sub-Zero appear in Goro’s Lair, which seems to be abandoned. Sub-Zero, returning to his feet, looks around the arena.
“I fought your brother here, in Shang Tsung’s Island. And it is here where will suffer his fate!”
“This rivalry serves no purpose, Scorpion.”
“My quest for revenge is at hand!”
A fight commences.
Sub-Zero is on the floor, bloodied and injured badly.
SCORPION: “By defeating you, Sub-Zero, I have avenged the death of my family and clan. Now, my soul may finally rest.”
Before the specter is able to do anything else, Liu Kang, Raiden, and Johnny Cage appear, thanks to the wrist portal they used, which seem to be functioning properly again. Scorpion becomes temporarily distracted.
“Scorpion! No! Sub-Zero is not the enemy!”
SUB-ZERO: (weakened voice) “He agrees with me. Your soul will never rest, Scorpion. The Lin Kuei may have been responsible for your murder, but your family’s true killer still remains free.”
SCORPION: “If you are not the murderer, then who is?”
“It is Quan Chi!”
Quan Chi opens a portal to Goro’s Lair right in time during the fray.
“Yes. Quite. Scorpion, you are to honestly believe the words of your enemies?”
“We are not your enemy, Scorpion. Quan Chi has manipulated you into believing we are.”
SCORPION: “How… can you be certain?”
“If you will not take for the words of a mortal, then take the confirmation of a god’s. I watched the events unfold. Quan Chi had orchestrated the plot. He was responsible. Sub-Zero’s death had served no purpose.”
Quan Chi looks over to Sub-Zero, who seems to be dying from his wounds. He feels that his goal to defeat the Lin Kuei was a success, and speaks out to Scorpion, confessing the truth.
“Yes. It is true. I am the one you seek. To defeat my nemesis, Sub-Zero, I needed the power of a specter. You have done my bidding well, Scorpion. But now, I must return you to the Netherrealm.”
Scorpion, fueled by rage and sheer anger, dashes towards the sorcerer. However, he fails to reach him in time and Quan Chi teleports Scorpion back to the lower planes of the Netherrealm. With Scorpion gone, Quan Chi shares his displeased looks with Raiden, Johnny Cage, Liu Kang, and Sub-Zero.
“You noisy fools. You think you have won just because you have discovered our plans. This battle is far from over.”
“We know what you are after, sorcerer. And we will secure it before you do. The Eye does not belong to Shinnok!”
“I’m sure you will, shaolin monk.”
Quan Chi opens a portal to which he escapes in. The portal immediately closes upon his withdrawal from the Lair. Raiden approaches the severely injured Sub-Zero.
RAIDEN: “You’re wounded.”
“I wonder what gave it away…”
Raiden goes on one knee and summons his healing abilities, resulting in Sub-Zero fatal injuries to fade away with ease. Sub-Zero begins to breathe normally once more, and gets back up on his feet. Raiden stands as well, forming a circle with the rest of his comrades.
“This is it. We’re all assembled.”
“We are ready at your word, Liu Kang.”
LIU KANG: “We must go to back to Kitana’s realm. Shinnok will begin the invasion any minute, now. The fate of the future now depends on the rest of us, and what we do will affect everything that transpires there.”
Raiden nods, extending his arm in the air. In a sudden flash of lightning, they teleport out of Goro’s Lair.
28 INT. HEADQUARTERS OF THE BROTHERHOOD OF SHADOW
A new scene opens in on the future counterparts, Quan Chi barricades the door of the headquarters shut with various chunks of brimstone. Beyond it, Scorpion can be heard slaughtering numerous members of the shadow. KIA, JATAAKA, and SAREENA stand behind the sorcerer, awaiting orders. Quan Chi, breathing uncomfortably, turns to his assassins.
“Shield the door! Sareena! Come with me!”
Kia and Jataaka obediently carry out their given orders and stand in front of the door while Sareena runs off with Quan Chi. They don’t make it very far, as within the 10th of a second, the door bursts open and send Kia and Jataaka flying. The two assassins rise in time to attack the ninja spectre, but are immediately killed due to Scorion’s precise and deadly kombat prowess. Scorpion teleports in a flash of fire to Sareena and Quan Chi, not wasting any stamina on running. Sareena, bent on defending her master, steps in and throws a punch. Scorpion grasps her fist and contorts her arm disturbingly, forcing Sareena to usher in a deafening and painful cry of agony and pain. To finish her off, he pulls out his kunai and slits her throat. Sareena falls back silently, her throat gushing out pints of crimson blood. Quan Chi throws in a sneak attack, firing one of his green skulls at the revenant. Scorpion flips back to his feet and the two assume a fighting stance.
SCORPION: “It is over, Quan Chi! I have waited more a decade to exact my revenge upon you for what you have did to my clan, my wife, and child. The last of your allies are dead! You have no one to hide behind, anymore!”
Quan Chi is speechless, finally learning what it means to experience true fear. To be finally vulnerable with nowhere left to hide. To face justice in the eyes…
“Yes… I can see it in your eyes… Death is what you fear. You can hide no more… You have trapped me in this realm for so long. No more… Now, you face justice!”
A fight commences.
Quan Chi is brutally beaten nearly to death-his eyes are blackened from the numerous punches he received, he is staggering from the heavy blows to the legs, his entire upper body is stained by streaks of blood. Scorpion readies his kunai.
“For my clan… and my family!”
He flings his spear, and with great accuracy and precision, impales Quan Chi in the forehead, creating a loud ‘cling’!.
29 EXT. THE SHAOLIN TEMPLES - GREAT DOORS - NIGHT
Kenshi, Fujin, Jax, Johnny Cage, and Nightwolf gather around the entrance of the Tekunin-occupied Shaolin Temples. They stride to keep themselves hidden.
FUJIN: “Remind me why we are here.”
KENSHI: “With you, we can reclaim the Shaolin Temples. There are quite a lot of prisoners here.”
JAX: “My wrist portal’s also out of juice. They have some sort of power source here I can take from the machines.”
“Shouldn’t we just go on an all-out assault? I mean it’s like we just sneak in the front door or anything. These guys are trackers. They’re just too many.”
“Right. Fujin, you’re a god. You’ll lead and slow those metal bastards down. Nightwolf, Kenshi, you guys follow through and clear the way for Cage.”
JOHNNY CAGE: “Great plan. I need to rescue those prisoners.”
FUJIN: “What will this accomplish anyway? My powers are limited, now.”
JAX: “Look, they need a protector…”
Fujin remains silent.
JOHNNY CAGE: “Ready?”
JAX: “On my count: One… Two… Three!”
On Jax’s mark, Fujin hovers and blows the doors of the Shaolin Temple open, summoning his god-like wind powers to clear the area for Jax, Johnny Cage, Nightwolf, and Kenshi to follow through.
SHAOLIN TEMPLE GROUNDS
Fujin continues to summon his strength to angrily shred the Tekunin machines. Kenshi and Nightwolf lend their aid as well, while Johnny Cage breaks the lock open and leads a few monks out of the cage before being crossed by another Tekunin sentinel. The Wind God ceases hovering and lands on the ground, his powers waning. He can’t go on any further; he has used the last of his abilities. Five Tekunin Sentinels surround him, along with Jax, Kenshi, Nightwolf, and Johnny Cage.
KENSHI: “Impossible. He can’t fight like this...”
Fujin grinds his teeth angrily, staring at the obscenities in their glowing golden eyes. He knew he was going to die here and now alongside his comrades.
JAX: “... No!”
Before the Tekunin Sentinels could fire their large golden beams, a sudden and loud rumbling of thunder soars through the clouds. A quick flash of bright red lightning crackles through the Tekunin machines, causing them to blow and plummet into the ground violently…
Smoke and fire poison the skies, but a black caped figure emerges from the thick smoke. His bright red eyes illuminate through the embers as he approaches the five warriors. He lands on the ground in front of them …
He is DARK RAIDEN
Fujin, shocked and infuriated, charges at the thunder god for a falcon punch. But Raiden simply steps to the side, tripping the wind god with his foot.
FUJIN: (struggling to return to his feet) “Raiden…”
“A pleasure to see you as well, ‘old friend.’”
30 INT. EDENIAN PALACE - THRONE ROOM - DAY
REPTILE is seen bound by glowing magical cuffs, standing between two guards. SINDEL sits upon her throne, facing them. The queen of Edenia glares coldly at the saurian, restraining the seething hatred brewing within her for him.
SINDEL: “...For your crimes against the realm of Edenia, I sentence you to a life of hard labor in the cobalt mines of Shokan.”
“You will pay for thissss, Sssindel. I will dessstroy you, and your people.”
As Reptile is led away, the AMBASSADOR of new realms is ushered in. Cloaked figures follow and Tanya stands aside.
SINDEL: “Ambassador of new realms, why do you seek my counsel?”
“Your majesty, my daughter, Tanya, was contacted by another realm that is being oppressed by an evil ruler.”
TANYA: “They seek to your wisdom and guidance.”
SINDEL: (furrowing a brow) “You may approach. I would like to hear your story.”
A familiar cloaked figure steps forward. Under the hood, it appears to be Quan Chi, in disguise.
“Thank you, Queen Sindel. I come from a realm known as Treche. We were a peaceful realm known for our devotion to the arts, until two years ago, when Treche was invaded by the evil sorcerer, Shil Kaad. He quickly conquered our people and forced us all into slavery.”
The conversation is suddenly interrupted by Kitana, who dashes into the palace to Sindel.
“Kitana?! What are you doing here? I thought you were trying to negotiate a treaty between the centaurians and shokan.”
KITANA: “Mother… There isn’t much time. We are being deceived. These visitors… They’re lying!”
“I assure you, Queen Sindel. The princess must be mistaken. We are a peaceful people simply seeking refuge in Edenia. We bring no intentions of violence.”
31 EXT. EDENIAN CAPITAL - DAY
Raiden, Sonya, Liu Kang, Kai, Jax, Johnny Cage, and Sub-Zero teleport to the Edenian Capital. The palace is seen in the distance.
LIU KANG: “Kitana must already be there! Hurry!”
The seven fighters sprint to reach the palace as fast as they could. Suspense builds up.
32 INT. EDENIAN PALACE - THRONE ROOM - DAY
Quan Chi grimaces under his hood as Kitana continues to speak.
KITANA: “Liu Kang told me horrible things… That Shinnok will invade this realm, attack the heavens….”
33 EXT. EDENIAN CAPITAL - DAY
Suspense continues to build further as the forces of light race to the palace.
LIU KANG: “Hurry!”
34 INT. EDENIAN PALACE - THRONE ROOM - DAY
Sindel pays no attention to her mysterious visitors. All she can do at the moment is listen to her daughter’s pleas.
KITANA: “You must not listen to what this man says.”
Sindel, horrified, turns to her suspicious visitors.
SINDEL: “Understand if I ask you to leave this realm and never return.”
Quan Chi, sly and wicked, raises a beautiful blue orb, emitting hues of a sapphire mist. Sindel and Kitana gaze upon it in wonder as the cunning sorcerer approaches them with it.
QUAN CHI: “As I said, you have us mistaken for another…. This is what my people offer.”
33 EXT. EDENIAN CAPITAL - DAY
Suspense builds to unbearable heights; The seven fighters draw much closer to the palace.
LIU KANG: “Kitana!”
34 INT. EDENIAN PALACE - THRONE ROOM - DAY
A frightening smirk spreads across Quan Chi’s pale face as Sindel and Kitana hold the orb in their hands, tranced by its aesthetic appearance.
SINDEL: “It’s beautiful… I could stare into it, forever.”
QUAN CHI: (speaking subtly) “Just as I planned….”
35 EXT. EDENIAN PALACE STAIRWAY - DAY
Just as Liu Kang, Raiden, Sub-Zero, Sonya, Jax, Kai, and Johnny Cage reach the stairway, the Edenian Palace trembles and a portal from above tears open, releasing legions of demons and hellish beasts.
The Edenian military springs into action and faces off against the numbers. Among the attackers are Reiko and Tanya, who finally reveal themselves.
LIU KANG: “NO!”
RAIDEN: “We are too late!”
LIU KANG: “We will never be able to find the Eye without them! I must find Kitana and see if she is safe!”
RAIDEN: “Liu Kang!”
Raiden watches Liu Kang sprint into the palace, only to be knocked back by a powerful green energy blast. The figure who walks out of the entrance appears to be Quan Chi, who removes his cloak. While the rest of the forces of light are occupied in battle, the sly sorcerer looks into the sky, and another portal tears open…
Out emerges the fallen elder god himself, Shinnok.
LIU KANG: “He is here!”
RAIDEN: “Liu Kang, wait!”
Liu Kang gravely underestimates his foe, having his attack countered by Shinnok. Quan Chi assists, firing another blast of energy to knock Liu Kang to the ground. The shaolin warrior is resilient, returning to his feet without a scratch and prepares a different approach. Before he could attack, however, Quan Chi extends his arm and purges Liu Kang’s mind. The act causes Liu Kang to scream in agonizing pain, its grip extending into the future.
36 INT. OIA BASE
Liu Kang’s mind becomes extremely unstable and his arms break free from the leather bounds. His arms flail and a fiery fist grazes Sonya Blade’s stomach, and the special forces agent screams loudly in pain as blood splatters out of the surface of her abdominal area.
TAVEN: “By the Elder Gods, no!”
Taven immediately dashes to Sonya Blade’s aid.
37 EXT. EDENIAN PALACE STAIRWAY - DAY
Liu Kang, his mind seemingly shattered, falls to the ground unconscious. A mortified Raiden scurries to Liu Kang while Kai comes in to swing a fist on Shinnok. The fallen elder god does not flinch and simply grasps his fist and twists it, causing Kai to yelp loudly. Quan Chi laughs mockingly, standing beside Shinnok.
“You humans never learn…”
Kai gives off a look of terror before Shinnok headbutts him. Quan Chi brings forth his magical prowess, manipulating Kai’s mind. He forces him to snap his own neck, and Kai immediately collapses on the floor, dead as stone....
“Lord Shinnok? The Eye….”
SHINNOK: “All these years, I had hoped to retrieve it without the meddling of these fools. No matter. Nothing stands between me and the Eye, now.”
Shinnok and Quan Chi turn around to the palace and take a few steps back. The fallen Elder God slowly waves his hand around the structure, scanning for something. A blue aura emits from his hands as soon as he makes contact with what he is looking for.
“There you are…”
Shinnok fires an intense blue ray from the palm of his hand at the Edenian palace, destroying the majority of the building. He then extends another arm towards the direction of the rubble and slowly retracts them both, while simultaneously reciting an ancient Edenian spell. His hands glow brighter. The palace grounds shake violently; a large pillar emerges from the debris, and a compartment opens… The Eye of Rasal.
SHINNOK: “The Eye… is mine.”
Quan Chi stands and watches intently as Shinnok paces himself towards the artifact. Once he grabs the Eye, the fallen elder god laughs darkly and ascends to the heavens with Quan Chi and the rest of the forces of darkness, preparing to take the fight against the Elder Gods…
The future has been sealed…
SHINNOK: (watching from above before he disappears) “Thank you… Raiden.”
The god of thunder watches Shinnok disappear into the heavens, before turning his attention back to Liu Kang, who suddenly regains consciousness. Raiden expresses a great deal of relief.
RAIDEN: “Liu Kang?!”
Raiden helps Liu Kang rise, but the shaolin warrior appears to be confused, as if he is not aware of what transpired earlier.
LIU KANG: “What is going on? Who are you?”
RAIDEN: “What are you talking about? I am your mentor-”
Liu Kang stumbles back defensively, startled by Raiden’s bright god-like eyes.
LIU KANG: “What in the hell is wrong with your eyes?!”
RAIDEN: “Liu Kang, listen. You brought us here to fend off against Shinnok’s army of darkness. Please, try to remember…”
38 INT. OIA BASE
Liu Kang appears to be more calm. Taven watches Sonya Blade stabilizes Liu Kang’s brainwaves. Her other hand is on her bloodied stomach, trying to prevent further blood loss. The pain is too much to bear, however. Yet, Sonya soldiers on, trying to make none of it. Eventually, the machine begins working properly, again. Sonya collapses onto a nearby chair, inhaling and exhaling deeply.
TAVEN: (approaching Sonya) “Try not to move too much. I will heal you to the best of my abilities.”
Sonya responds only with a silent nod, and shuts her eyes slowly, relieved her efforts were not in vain.
39 EXT. EDENIAN PALACE STAIRWAY - DAY
Liu Kang shakes his head slightly, blinking several times before snapping back to reality. Raiden still bears the look of concern.
RAIDEN: “Liu Kang… I need you to stay with me.”
LIU KANG: “What…? Lord Raiden?”
RAIDEN: “Liu Kang? What happened?”
LIU KANG: “I don't know… wait. The Eye… Where is it?”
“… We failed. Shinnok managed to retrieve it before we did.”
LIU KANG: “He what?!”
Fujin descends to the ground from the heavens, apparently surviving Shinnok’s onslaught.
FUJIN: “We were outnumbered. Many of the Elder Gods have been slain… as our own. I had to help others escape… we, too, would have perished if we had remained too long.”
LIU KANG: “This is all wrong… I thought the Eye was in the Temple. It was…”
Liu Kang recalls something critically important and turns around to the broken Edenian Palace.
LIU KANG: “Kitana!”
Liu Kang sprints to the mess of the Edenian Palace, scraping through every brick and block. Eventually, he finds Kitana unconscious under the rubble; her body is bruised and bloody from the collapsing of the palace.
LIU KANG: “Kitana…”
He picks her up from the ground in a bridal form and carries her back to Raiden, with the rest of the forces of light gathering up with him. They appear infuriated and wounded pretty badly. Liu Kang drops to his knees, crying softly as he continues to hold the severely wounded Kitana in his arms.
JAX: “We trusted you! What the hell were you thinking bringing us here?! You said the Eye was back in the temple!”
Liu Kang, still looking down in sorrow, sobs and his voice stutters.
“I thought… I could do it. I promised to look for her in the past, change our mistakes, and stop Shinnok from getting the Eye… I thought I could change the future.”
JAX: “Forget your future shit! You got almost all of us killed!”
RAIDEN: “Jackson Briggs! Restrain yourself.”
There is a great deal of silence among the forces of light for several seconds. Johnny Cage frowns, standing up after checking Kai for a pulse.
JOHNNY CAGE: “I’m pretty sure no one here would’ve died if Liu Kang didn’t go mad with all this ‘future’ crap. Forget it, guys… We’re going to finish this ourselves… Without their help.”
Sonya Blade, Jax, and Johnny Cage gather together and activate the wrist portal, teleporting out of Edenia instantly, leaving only Sub-Zero standing in front of Liu Kang, Raiden, Fujin, and the unconscious Kitana, still in Liu Kang’s arms.
Kuai Liang stares at the four silently, burdened with conflict. He had to make a choice on the spot: Joining Liu Kang and continue the cause to save the future, or leave and abandon all that Liu Kang told him regarding him and Bi-Han. The two gods stare desperately, eagerly waiting for Sub-Zero’s decision.
SUB-ZERO: “.... I’m truly sorry.”
Sub-Zero turns around and leaves everyone, ultimately making his choice. Raiden looks down in complete sorrow and shame. Fujin’s facial expression shifts as well.
“Our efforts were in vain…”
“I came a long way for nothing…”
FUJIN: “Time flows like a river. You can direct and throw a rock into the current… but the current keeps flowing. In other words, ‘What if Shinnok was destined to possess the Eye?”
40 EXT. THE SKIES OF EARTHREALM - NIGHT
Jax flies the Special Forces jet through the skies and to somewhere safe secure and plan their next objective. The aircraft soars through the skies at great speed.
41 INT. THE SPECIAL FORCES JET - MAIN CABIN - NIGHT
The passengers include Raiden, Fujin, Nightwolf, and Kenshi, sit quietly in their respective seats. Fujin cannot take his eyes off Raiden, due to the searing hatred brewing within him.
RAIDEN: “What happened?”
FUJIN: “...The relinquishing of my status affects my elemental abilities.”
Brief pause: Raiden turns to Fujin with a visible muddled expression.
RAIDEN: “You sacrificed your powers so you could rid yourself of your burdens?”
FUJIN: “I sacrificed my powers so I could rest.”
Another brief pause. Fujin looks out to the window of the jet.
FUJIN: “What do you know of it?”
RAIDEN: “I once lost my fair share….”
FUJIN: (scoffing) “Dry your eyes, Raiden. It doesn’t justify what you’ve done.”
RAIDEN: “You haven’t the slightest idea what I’ve done.”
FUJIN: “I know you took the Raiden I once knew as a brother”
“… You should have fought harder for him.”
Fujin becomes infuriated by the mockery and rises from his seat along with Raiden, as if the two were about to brawl.
FUJIN: “If you seek a fight, Raiden, I will give you a fight!”
JOHNNY CAGE: “Sit down!”
Raiden shakes a finger behind him, signaling Johnny Cage to remain seated.
RAIDEN: “Let him go.”
Fujin, emotional and furious, scolds Raiden by the collar and his voice breaks.
FUJIN: “You abandoned me! You took everything away and abandoned me!”
Raiden’s eyes flash a brighter red hue than ever before as the jet itself begins to shake as Raiden speaks.
Raiden: “Kai… Bo’ Rai Cho… Li Mei… Stryker… Kung Lao…”
42 EXT. EARTHREALM SKIES - NIGHT
The weather outside becomes more and more unstable, with blood red lightning striking furiously, fortunately avoiding the jet.
43 INT. THE SPECIAL FORCES JET - NIGHT
The jet continues to shake rapidly while Raiden stands perfectly still, scolding Fujin.
RAIDEN: “Allies… ALL dead! Countless others enslaved! Killed!”
JAX: (struggling to keep the jet stable) “Raiden!”
Fujin staggers back slightly, speechless as Raiden continues to angrily shout with unswerving fury.
RAIDEN: “You were supposed to protect them! Where were you when they needed you the most, Fujin?! Why did you not save them?! You have abandoned us all!”
The weather outside stabilizes and the jet stops shaking. Fujin, engulfed by sorrow and emotion, leaves the main cabin.
JOHNNY CAGE: “Still an asshole….”
RAIDEN: (turning around to Johnny Cage) “You wasted our time bringing him… You are certain Liu Kang can change all this?”
JOHNNY CAGE: “We’re trying so hard to stop all this, buddy.”
RAIDEN: “We are going to Outworld.”
JOHNNY CAGE: “Explain why.”
RAIDEN: “I have something of importance to retrieve there. It will benefit your endeavor as well”
JOHNNY CAGE: “Well, I sure as hell hope it’s important. We’re not going to stay in Outworld too long. Not with our own realm at stake.”
Johnny Cage slicks his hair back and leans against his seat.
“Now are you going to pick all that shit up?”
CHAPTER 5: KENSHI
44 EXT. THE WASTELANDS - NIGHT
The Special Forces ship lands in the wastelands of the empty Outworld. Exiting from the aircraft are Jax, Kenshi, Nightwolf, Johnny Cage, Fujin, and Raiden. Their eyes scan across the environment, looking for any potential threats nearby.
“Remind me why we are here, again?”
RAIDEN: “The Eye is in Shinnok’s possession. If we find and interrogate Reiko, Emperor of Outworld, we’ll have knowledge of Shinnok’s whereabouts.”
“Whoaaaa no no no no no no. First of all: How do you know Reiko holds the answer to where the old fart is? Secondly, the plan was to help buy Liu Kang more time while he’s helping us back there.”
RAIDEN: “I never agreed to your plan. My objective is to secure the Eye in case your ‘champion’ fails in his task.”
FUJIN: “Sounds too good to be true.”
Johnny Cage narrows his eyes a bit under his sunglasses.
JOHNNY CAGE: “No… I don’t trust you. You’re hiding something.”
The dark god of thunder’s eyes flash a bright red hue, maintaining a grim and expressionless look.
JAX: “C’mon… He’s right. There’s gotta be a plan B in case things don’t go where it needs to.”
Kenshi drops to a knee and places one of his hands on the ground.
KENSHI: “The palace is near… Probably just a few more miles west. We should tread carefully.”
45 INT. OUTWORLD PALACE - EMPEROR REIKO'S THRONE ROOM - DAY
Opening in on the throne room of the future emperor of Outworld, Reiko. His throne faces the glass window, and he receives a great view of his metropolitan city. He is interrupted by the great doors. MILEENA enters and bows before REIKO, who turns his throne around, facing her.
MILEENA: “My emperor, we have unexpected visitors…”
REIKO: “Do we, now? The thunder god, I presume?”
“Yes. But he is not alone.”
Reiko chuckles evilly, as if anticipating Raiden's arrival. The emperor sways his hand slightly as he walks past Mileena, dismissing her.
46 INT. OUTWORLD PALACE - HALLWAYS
Raiden, Fujin, Jax, Johnny Cage, Kenshi, and Nightwolf continue walking through the surprisingly empty halls of Reiko’s palace.
JOHNNY CAGE: “Why are these halls so empty? I thought the guy would at least patrol these areas.”
JAX: “Lunch break, I guess?”
NIGHTWOLF: “But every single one of them…?”
The six reach another great door.
RAIDEN: “The throne room must lie beyond this door…”
Jax turns and nods to Kenshi, who slowly makes a few subtle footsteps towards the great door. He places an ear against it, using his sharpened senses to detect any life on the other side.
Kenshi takes a few steps back and slowly creaks the door open with his telekinetic abilities. Once the door opens, he points his chin forward.}
OUTWORLD PALACE - COLOSSUS ROOM
The rest follow Kenshi as he slowly walks into a larger room with an Emperor Reiko statue in the center. The room identically resembles the one Taven had once fought the Shao Kahn Colossus in two years ago. The six immediately find themselves extremely vulnerable, as the great door behind them closes shut and the Emperor Reiko colossus becomes active.
KENSHI: “Take cover!”
The colossus begins firing fireballs at the six. Raiden teleports away to gain higher ground, re-appearing high in the air. Nightwolf, Fujin, Kenshi, Jax, and Johnny Cage quickly hide behind the pillars. Raiden noticing his colleagues cowering from the statue, shouts in rage.
FUJIN: “I never asked for this…”
“The statue can only be destroyed if I activate these energy circles. One of you need to bait it to the center of the room and activate the large switch!”
JAX: “What do you say, Cage?”
JOHNNY CAGE: “Why do I have to be the bait?!”
On the count of three, Johnny Cage and Jax dash out of the comfort zone and into the battlefield. The colossal Reiko statues fires mercilessly at them as Raiden zaps all four energy circles. Jax makes it on time and stands on top of the large green platform, his bionic arms glow purple.
JAX: “...Anytime now, Cage!”
JOHNNY CAGE: “This is harder than it looks, you know!”
The former action star, though successfully baiting the statue to the center of the room, becomes hit with one of the massive fireballs from the colossus. Johnny Cage screams in agony as he flies forward a few feet, his legs bloodied and probably snapped.
“You clumsy imbecile…”
Jax spares no second and pounds the floor, igniting the boom and the statue becomes shattered to pieces. One of the large pieces of the statue almost falls on Jax, but Nightwolf manages to jump in time to push him out of the way.
NIGHTWOLF: “Look out!”
Another large stone piece of the statue would have fell and killed the severely injured Johnny Cage, had Kenshi not stepped in time and saved him, using his telekinesis to hold the stone pieces in the air. He eventually swings his arm to the side, sending the shattered rocks flying away further in the large room.
JOHNNY CAGE: “Thanks-- Grrragghh! Ow!”
Johnny Cage appears more wounded than originally thought. Nightwolf, Jax, and Fujin regroup with one another. Kenshi perceives another threat in the room with them and signals them to be quiet. In a few seconds, he throws a swift roundhouse kick to Reptile, who appeared to be in camouflage.
KENSHI: “I heard your footsteps, lizard.”
REPTILE: (snarls) “Don’t underesssstimate me, swordsssman.”
A fight commences.
Reptile lies on the floor, unconscious, while Raiden appears again, standing in an uncomfortable distance from the rest of his team.
FUJIN: “Raiden! Why are you just standing there? Can you not see Johnny Cage is injured? Heal him!”
Raiden gives no reply are any facial gesture… He simply stands there.... Staring coldly at them.
FUJIN: (glancing back at Johnny’s wounded leg, then to Raiden) “Raiden!”
The dark god of thunder extends his arm out and zaps all five of them with shocking red lightning. Their screams of pain and agony echo through the room and beyond as they collapse onto the floor. Some of them, including Johnny Cage, Nightwolf, and Jax falls unconscious, while others such as Fujin and Kenshi scrape up enough energy to keep themselves awake, but still lie in severe pain.
RAIDEN: (slowly approaching) “As I said, I was on my own agenda.”
FUJIN: “Raiden… How could you…?”
RAIDEN: (angrily pointing a finger at Fujin) “No. How could you, god protector of Earthrealm, turn your back on the people who worshipped and revered you as their leader?! You compromised… in the face of Armageddon!”
FUJIN: “You don’t understand… Those voices. The pain and agony of those people….”
“Then you are NO leader! These mortals must be ruled under an iron fist, not by an idle-minded emotional weakling who hides behind the heavens!”
Distant clapping is heard; Reiko enters the room.
REIKO: “Ugh. What a mess… Oh well, I suppose that is what the palace janitor is for. Well, ‘lord’ Raiden. It seems you have given me what I wanted.” (glancing at Kenshi)
RAIDEN: “I trust Shinnok has what I want.”
REIKO: “Yes yes. Earthrealm will be yours. This game of Monopoly is finally done. We have all played our hand. The Elder God anticipates your return…”
Raiden nods as Reiko steps back a little, opening a large portal to the Netherrealm for the thunder god to step into. Kenshi yells, ‘NOOOOOOO!’ as the portal closes, and Reiko, annoyed, silences the blind swordsman with a boot to the face, blacking out entirely.
47 EXT. REIKO’S COLOSSEUM - DAY
Kenshi slowly regains consciousness as two Outworld guards carry him into Reiko’s Colosseum by the arms. Kenshi can hear the crowd cheering in the distance as he draws closer to the arena, and they drop him upon their destination.
“Welcome! I don’t believe any of your kind has set foot here in a great many years, correct? Well, consider it a generous gesture you’re still standing here well and alive…”
Kenshi slowly returns to his feet, looking around the arena curiously, despite being blind and blindfolded.
KENSHI: “My friends… Where are my friends?”
REIKO: “Ah… Your allies, yes. You can earn their freedom, you know. I have selected you for a great deal of purposes. I would be most interested in seeing a demonstration of your telekinetic powers…”
A gate in the edge of the colosseum opens, and out comes the four-armed Shokan prince, GORO, who cockily nears Kenshi with the crowd roaring from above.
“The blind swordsman…?” (laughs arrogantly) “He will fail to see my attacks.”
“Mockery will get you nowhere, hideous one.”
A fight commences.
The crowd cheers on Kenshi, who drops to his knees in front of the defeated Goro. Reiko grimaces slightly, but his anger immediately turns to admiration, marvelling Kenshi’s skill in kombat. The sword saint slowly stands back on two feet and enters a defensive stance as Reiko stands from his throne and silently enters the arena. The crowd’s voices of cheering and applauding dominate the colosseum.
REIKO: “You have the honor of kombat with the Emperor… Bask in it.”
A fight commences.
Reiko returns to his feet and signals his guards to knock the swordsman unconscious. Kenshi is struck in the back of the head and becomes knocked out cold. Reiko angrily turns and walks away, gritting his teeth in sheer fury.
“Emperor? Will you not carry out the procedures?”
REIKO: (humiliated and angry) “Not now! Just lock him up! I’m not in the mood….”
The guards obey and carry out their orders as Reiko leaves the colosseum.
49 INT. SHINNOK'S SPIRE - THRONE ROOM – DAY
The fallen Elder God of the future, Shinnok, is seen for the first time standing beside his throne, gazing out his window. He is adorned in regal wear never seen before; equipped with a new robe that sports horns and velvet linings. The god of thunder, Raiden, teleports to the spire, boldly standing emotionless as Shinnok turns around to him.
SHINNOK: “Is it done?”
RAIDEN: “Just as you have asked. I did not see Sonya Blade, Taven, or Sub-Zero, however.”
SHINNOK: “Hiding, I presume. No matter. I'm certain that you will find them now that Earth is secured in your hands.”
The fallen Elder God extends his hand out, offering the Earthrealm Kamidogu to Raiden. The thunder god takes the massive artifact greedily, engulfed by a sense of power and domination.
RAIDEN: “I will find them and bring them to justice. There will be none left to oppose me.”
Raiden teleports out of Shinnok's spire in a flash of crimson lightning. Shinnok himself chuckles darkly, returning to his throne.
SHINNOK: I'm sure there won't, Raiden… I'm sure there won't…
CHAPTER 6: FUJIN
50 INT. OUTWORLD PALACE - PRISON – NIGHT
Kenshi, weak and fatigued from earlier, is carried by two guards back into his cell. Johnny Cage, Nightwolf, Jax, and Fujin are all in their own.
The wind god sits on the bench in the dark corner of his own cell, locks of his own long white hair covering his face as he stares down in utter depression.
FUJIN: “This was all a mistake. A waste of effort. None of this should have happened. The Raiden I once I knew… he is gone forever.”
JOHNNY CAGE: “Ugh. He's at it, again.”
JAX: “Don't worry. We're going to get out. All we need is-”
FUJIN: “No! Don't any of you ignorant fools understand? What more has to happen before you all realize how pointless your efforts really are?! This world is destined to end! We are only delaying the inevitable! Once Shinnok is prepared, he will destroy everything. This world will cease from existence forever. Face it, for once… we have lost it all. It is over.”
Fujin's rant has silenced everyone completely. Everyone looks down, giving up hope once and for all that their world can be saved from Armageddon.
51 EXT. THE SHAOLIN TEMPLES - THE BALCONY - NIGHT
Liu Kang, depressed and weary, watches his fellow shaolin monks do their everyday activities from the balcony. His silence is interrupted by the god of wind, Fujin. Liu Kang doesn’t move a muscle, addled by thoughts of grief and sadness. Fujin stands next to the shaolin warrior, sharing his view of the shaolin temples.
FUJIN: “She is safe.”
LIU KANG: “What am I to do, now? He has what he needs to shape the future. How could I have failed?”
Fujin keeps quiet, thinking about this ‘future’ Liu Kang keeps going on about.
FUJIN: “Liu Kang… Tell me everything. This war… ‘Armageddon’.”
Liu Kang thinks for several seconds, trying to set up a beginning, middle, and end to the whole scenario for Fujin. Liu Kang looks down further from the balcony, ushering in a deep breath, and exhaling with a disheartened sigh.
LIU KANG: “Mortal Kombat… There have been many battles fought over the millennia, but our growing tensions have begun to shake the fabric of the realms. We have reached the critical point, and now we’re threatened with extinction. At this point in time, many things transpired. Raiden had gone dark, our team had become separated, and you were the protector of Earthrealm. When Armageddon struck, we fought so hard against the forces of darkness. Shinnok knew this was coming… All of it.”
FUJIN: “He discovered? …Or did someone inform him of the Eye?”
LIU KANG: “That is what I am trying to piece together. The only way Shinnok would have known of the Eye’s location is if someone told him beforehand. With that artifact, he had made everything worse.”
LIU KANG: “After defeating Raiden, you were unable to move on. You became a broken god, abandoning Earthrealm. You were our only hope in buying us more time against the Tekunin sentinels. There is nothing we can do to convince you.”
FUJIN: “Yes, there is.”
Liu Kang looks over to Fujin.
FUJIN: “You may think there is no hope for him. But I know I can help.”
LIU KANG: “You heard everything I have been telling you, right? You don’t want to see this nightmare.”
FUJIN: “Liu Kang. I need to see. Let me look past you.”
LIU KANG: “No…” (sobbing) “You don’t want our suffering… You don’t want our future!”
FUJIN: “Let me look past you. To my future.”
Liu Kang, reluctant at first, slowly closes his eyes as Fujin accesses his brain. The wind god places two glowing hands on the shaolin warrior’s head, giving him access to travel into the future.
52 INT. OIA BASE
Fujin opens his eyes, and finds himself in Liu Kang’s place on the metal bed. Everything appears to be slowed down, as a result of Fujin’s temporary presence in the distant time period. The wind god looks around the wrecked Outerworld Investigation Agency Base, and Sonya Blade resting on a chair to the side, with Taven tending to her wounds.
53 INT. OUTWORLD PALACE - PRISON CELLS - NIGHT
Time still appears to be slowed down, but future Fujin is sitting on his prison cell bench, wondering why everything is muted and unmoving. He becomes startled by a subtle voice resembling his own.
FUJIN (past): “Fujin… Fujin…”
Future Fujin turns his head to the source of the calm whispering and becomes surprised in the encounter with his past self. Past Fujin drops on one knee, aligning his height with his sitting future counterpart. The dispirited future wind god can’t help but curve his lips into a slight smile at the sight of his younger self.
FUJIN (future): “Fujin…? This is not a dream, is it?”
FUJIN (past): “No. With Liu Kang’s mind, I have travelled through space and time to reach you.”
FUJIN (future): “Then, by the Elder Gods, it really did work.”
FUJIN (past): “So… This is what becomes of us? Liu Kang was right.”
FUJIN (future): “Yes. I tried to tell them. Fools. They wouldn’t listen. Our worlds are doomed.”
FUJIN (past): “Not if we change history, today.”
FUJIN (future): “After seeing all this, you still believe there’s hope?”
FUJIN (past): “No matter how desolate things may be, there is always a solution. Sometimes, we must try a little harder to succeed. We must not lose faith, Fujin.”
Tears run down across future Fujin’s face, experiencing human emotional weakness for the first time in his life.
FUIJN (future): “I-I can’t. I have seen too much… Those poor people… (sniff) So… much… pain.”
FUJIN (past): “It’s not their pain you’re afraid of, Fujin. It’s yours. And as improbable as it may sound in these desperate times, you were made to burden that pain… to make you stronger. Earth needs a leader to guide them. To gift them with the most beautiful impulse of the mortal spirit… Hope.”
Future Fujin’s dreary eyes lock on to Past Fujin’s, heavily inspired by his words.
FUJIN (past): “Please… We need you again to hope for us.”
54 EXT. SHAOLIN TEMPLES - THE BALCONY - NIGHT
Fujin backs away from Liu Kang slowly, who opens his eyes again for the first time.
LIU KANG: “Found what you’re looking for?”
FUJIN: “Yes. As for us, history changes today. We will take the fight to the Netherrealm. We will not allow Shinnok to have the Eye of Rasal.”
LIU KANG: “Who will we assemble? Our team is separated.”
Much to Fujin and Liu Kang’s surprise, Hotaru approaches them. The Seidan Commander folds his arms, smiling at the two a friendly manner.
LIU KANG: (surprised) “Hotaru?”
HOTARU: “You know, I never properly thanked you for what you and your friends did back in Seido. And I know of your plight, Liu Kang. I heard the whole thing. In fact, I would be honored to join you in the fight against Shinnok.”
An involuntary smile spreads across Liu Kang’s face, as if rejuvenated by what he perceives to be a slight spec of hope. He does a shaolin bow before Hotaru.
LIU KANG: “We would be honored for you to join us.”
FUJIN: “I saw them… Kenshi and Nightwolf. We will need them as well.”
LIU KANG: “Let us go, then. The future depends on it.”
55 INT. EDENIAN PALACE - INFIRMARY - DAY
Kitana, semi-awake and lying in a bed in the infirmary, is visited by Fujin, Liu Kang, Raiden, Hotaru, and Nightwolf. Liu Kang, enamoured at the sight of Kitana’s lustrous beauty, drops to a knee beside her and places a hand on her forehead. Kitana’s voice is soft and calm.
KITANA: “Liu Kang. You’ve returned.”
LIU KANG: “How are you feeling?”
KITANA: “My wounds aren’t critical. I’ll manage in a few months.”
LIU KANG: “Elder Gods be praised…”
KITANA: “You’ve brought friends.”
LIU KANG: “Yes. This is Kenshi, Nightwolf, and Commander Hotaru. We need your help. We are taking the fight to the Netherrealm. Shinnok must pay for the ravaging of Edenia.”
Kitana observes her guests, pursing her lips into a slight smile. She nods to Liu Kang.
KITANA: “I will give you a handful of my best soldiers.”
LIU KANG: (nodding) “I promise we will avoid as many casualties as we can. We will not fail. We cannot. Not with this much at stake, here.”
Kitana, assured by Liu Kang’s promise, closes her eyes and sighs.
RAIDEN: “This battle will be the determiner of our future.”
FUJIN: “There are so many questions left, however.”
RAIDEN: “Such as?”
FUJIN: “Who revealed the existence of the Eye to Shinnok?”
Raiden is silent, leaving Fujin’s curiosity unanswered. Liu Kang rises to his feet, returning to his friends.
LIU KANG: “Is everyone ready?”
HOTARU: “That eye is as good as ours. Let us go.”
KENSHI: “How will we go to the Netherrealm?”
FUJIN: “Raiden and I will open a portal for you to enter.”
NIGHTWOLF: “‘If’ it’s done.”
LIU KANG: “‘Once’. We have come a long way, already. Failure is not an option.”
Fujin nods, marvelling at Liu Kang’s inspiring words.
56 INT. OUTWORLD PALACE - PRISON CELLS - NIGHT
Fujin stands from his bench, more confident than ever. He holds the bars of his cell and exerts little effort to pull them apart. His powers and god-like strength have returned to him once more. Johnny Cage, Jax, Kenshi, and Nightwolf wake up and investigate the commotion Fujin is causing.
JOHNNY CAGE: “What are you-?”
FUJIN: “Helping us escape.”
The wind god pulls the cell cage and tears it apart, before moving on to break the cages of his friends, freeing them as well. Fujin then rushes to Johnny Cage’s aid, healing his wounded leg with his godly powers.
JAX: “I thought you said-”
FUJIN: “I was wrong. We must give Liu Kang more time to prepare. Quick, Jackson Briggs. Contact Kitana, Hotaru, and Sub-Zero to meet us in Raiden’s Sky Temple. It is time for old hatreds to put aside and take one final stand.”
Jax wastes no time and activates his wrist comm, contacting the fighters Fujin listed while Kenshi, Nightwolf, and Johnny Cage exit their cells, stretching their unstressed limbs for the first time in hours. Once it is done, Jax joins them.
KENSHI: (focusing) “We go left. The door to outside the palace is there.”
JAX: “Uh-Oh. Bad news, guys.”
NIGHTWOLF: “What is it?”
JAX: “My wrist portal’s almost out of juice. Once we go to the Sky Temple, it’s going to die.”
FUJIN: “Then this really is it. Our last chance to make things right. We will fight until the end. I know Raiden is in Earthrealm. If he finds Liu Kang, all is lost.”
JOHNNY CAGE: “We gotta get to him before Raiden does!”
FUJIN: “No. Liu Kang cannot be interrupted. The OIA base must be secured and sealed off. We must divert him. Now is our chance.”
KENSHI: “Let us go, then.”
57 INT. OUTWORLD PALACE - GREAT DOORS - NIGHT
Fujin, Kenshi, Nightwolf, Johnny Cage, and Jax, approach the great doors of Reiko’s palace, eager to finally leave once and for all. Just as they are about to open the door, they are startled by something. An ambush! They are immediately surrounded by Reiko’s guards. The five hastily enter their fighting stances. Fujin’s eyes focus heavily on the approaching Goro, who cracks his knuckles as he nears the five kombatants.
JOHNNY CAGE: “Goro…”
FUJIN: “Jackson Briggs?”
JAX: “Already on it. Nightwolf, cover me while I prep this bad boy up.”
Goro nears Fujin, laughing arrogantly.
GORO: “You’re supposed to be a broken god.”
FUJIN: “A shame I will break you before manage you to land a finger on me.”
A fight commences.
With Goro down, the guards immediately bring on their assault. The five back away and guard Jax as he activates his wrist portal. Unfortunately, they are getting too close for comfort.
JOHNNY CAGE: “Uuuummmm… Fujin?!”
Fujin’s eyes grow whiter than ever, and his powers are summoned, blowing the dashing guards away with hurricane-like winds. Reiko arrives just in time to investigate the commotion, only to be angered at the sight of his own guards slamming into the walls of the enormous room.
The Outworld Emperor charges at the wind god, hoping to land a strike. But Reiko’s anger allows Fujin to gain the upper hand, countering with a move of his own and staggering him back. Reiko grinds his teeth, seething with anger and hatred.
REIKO: “I will not let you go!”
A fight commences.
Reiko, gravely wounded, orders more of his guards to attack. Jax’s wrist portal beeps, much to his relief.
JAX: “Got it!”
Fujin backs away, stepping into the portal’s radius in time to teleport away from Outworld with his friends before the Outworld guards manage to strike them. Reiko himself returns to his feet with the assistance of his soldiers, though he seems furious.
58 EXT. RAIDEN’S SKY TEMPLE - NIGHT
Fujin, Johnny Cage, Jax, Nightwolf, and Kenshi successfully teleport to the Sky Temple. They stagger back a bit, adjusting to the new environment they’ve transported in. It doesn’t take long for them to notice Kitana, Frost, Sub-Zero, and Hotaru, who already appear to be at the temple.
KITANA: “You’ve arrived.”
The nine warriors form a circle, reuniting at last.
FUJIN: “At last… We are all here.”
59 EXT. EDENIAN SOUTHLANDS - DUSK
500 Edenian Soldiers are seen following Liu Kang, Hotaru, Kenshi, and Nightwolf through the flat and barren southlands. Fujin and Raiden are leading the way. They eventually order everyone to stop with a hand signal. The two gods exchange a nod with each other before taking a few steps forward and extending their hands into the air. Thunder and Wind circulate violently, as the power of Raiden and Fujin are truly realized. The combination of their awesome abilities tear open an abnormally large portal to the Netherrealm. They both turn around to their allies, speaking in loud voices to match with that of the portal’s nearly deafening roar.
RAIDEN: “We have opened for you a portal to Hell!”
FUJIN: “Your objective here is to only avenge the losses of your loved ones during the massacre of the Edenian Palace, but to retrieve the fabled Eye of Rasal!”
The Edenian Soldiers begin muttering among themselves, awed by the mentioning of the Eye.
FUJIN: “Do not spare these spawns your blade! They were condemned in this wretched realm for a reason! Slay them and show them that this Edenia is not to be trifled with! Together, now!”
Liu Kang, Hotaru, Kenshi, Nightwolf, and the five-hundred Edenian soldiers draw their weapons and raise their shields as they usher in a loud and inspiring battle cry. Fujin and Raiden levitate in the air and move to the sides, allowing them to charge into the portal to the Netherrealm.
60 EXT. NETHERREALM CITY - DAY
From the large portal emerges Liu Kang, Hotaru, Nightwolf, Kenshi, and the 500 Edenian Soldiers. This charge viciously, slaughtering every denizen of hell they encounter within the city, making their way to Shinnok’s Palace.
61 EXT. SHINNOK’S SPIRE - BALCONY - DAY
Shinnok, his ears drawn to the sound of battle, dashes to his balcony, only to find his numerous guards and people slaughtered by the forces of light. The fallen Elder God grits his teeth at the sight of the carnage.
62 EXT. EDENIAN SOUTHLANDS - DUSK
Raiden and Fujin cease hovering and land on the ground slowly, hearing battle take place within the Netherrealm.
FUJIN: “They have started. It has begun.”
Raiden is silent, his mind addled by something.
Fujin turns his head to side; to Raiden.
RAIDEN: “The Eye… This wasn’t meant to happen.”
FUJIN: “What are you talking about?”
RAIDEN: “Forgive me.”
The unsuspecting Fujin becomes struck by a bolt of lightning, and the thunder god attempts to quickly seal the portal to the Netherrealm, intending trap the forces of light in there.
FUJIN: “What are you doing?!”
Fujin returns to his feet and dashes into Raiden to tackle him down. The portal remains untouched as the two gods battle it out. Raiden shoves Fujin off of him and attempts to swing, but his attack is dodged with ease and Fujin counters with a move of his own.
FUJIN: “It was you! You were responsible for this!”
RAIDEN: “Shinnok promised me the security of Earthrealm!”
Raiden fires another lightning bolt, but Fujin manages to teleport to the other side in a flash of wind and throw a side-kick to the thunder god’s rib, causing him to stumble back a bit.
FUJIN: “So that is why you did little during this whole plight. You, too, have been seduced by the illusion the Eye created. I pity you, brother.”
RAIDEN: “I have protected Earth for many millennia. I must ensure that it stays protected!”
A fight commences.
Raiden tries to quickly get back up, but Fujin only strikes him down with a fist to the head. The wind god holds his elemental counterpart by the collar.
FUJIN: “Raiden, this is not our way. We don’t make deals with devils.”
RAIDEN: “You don’t understand…”
FUJIN: “No. You don’t. Do you honestly think that Shinnok, a god whose experience and age surpasses your own, will simply hand over the Earth to you? Believe me when I say he won’t. He wanted to rule this Earth, to begin with. Once he is finished manipulating you, he will continue pulling the strings of everyone else. He is deceiving you. He is deceiving all of us.”
FUJIN: “Join me, Raiden. Let us end this nightmare… together… as brothers.”
Fujin releases his grip from Raiden’s collar and stands back. The thunder god himself returns to his feet and ponders on Fujin’s compelling words of wisdom. Within seconds, he returns sight to his brother and offers a nod of acknowledgement.
CHAPTER 7: RAIDEN
FUJIN: “There isn’t much time. They need our help.”
RAIDEN: “Agreed. Let us go.”
The two Earth gods dash into the portal to the Netherrealm.
63 EXT. NETHERREALM CITY - DAY
As Raiden and Fujin surface from the portal to hell, they find already enough screams and blade-clanging. They, too, join the blood-boiling kombat ensuing and summon their might. Raiden, however is intercepted by the ambassador’s daughter, Tanya.
RAIDEN: “You… I have no time for your meddling, she-devil.”
TANYA: “I have never done battle with a thunder god.”
RAIDEN: “Consider yourself unfortunate for angering one.”
A fight commences.
Raiden strides in to land a killing blow on Tanya, but becomes struck by a green skull ball. Raiden winces slightly, being approached by his attacker, Quan Chi.
QUAN CHI: “You were supposed to help us, fool. What do you think you’re doing?”
RAIDEN: “Rectifying my errors. This future must change, now!”
A fight commences.
Quan Chi lies on the floor, unconscious from Raiden’s lightning fast strikes. He looks up to the spire of Shinnok from the distance, and Liu Kang rushes up to him.
LIU KANG: “Lord Raiden! We’re pushing them back! Thanks to you and Fujin, we managed to slay hundreds!”
RAIDEN: “Those are all pleasing news, Liu Kang, but we should proceed with clearing the spire.”
LIU KANG: “Agreed. Let’s move!”
They all push forward, driving the Netherrealm’s hordes of soldiers back even further.
64 INT. TEKUNIN STORAGE BASE - NIGHT
Elsewhere in the distant future, Dark Raiden finds himself wandering into a large and dimmed room filled with inactive Tekunin Sentinels. The dark god of thunder boldly inspects the large machines around him, emotionless and grim. A smaller TEKUNIN BOT passes by from behind before noticing Raiden in the room with him. Not recognizing the intruder, the cyborg beeps.
TEKUNIN BOT: “UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS. INTR-”
Dark Raiden does not bother turning around, and simply fires a blast of crimson-red lightning at the bot, frying it to bits. He proceeds inspecting the Sentinels, before finally holding his hands up in the air. The dark god of lightning closes his eyes, as the room shakes with thunderous fury. Suddenly, the Tekunin Sentinels activate and float, blasting the ceiling open. Raiden appears to have picked up a new ability in his arsenal of powers: to control the electricity and wiring in machines. This newfound power allows him to bend the Tekunin Sentinels to his will. Raiden levitates from the building and into the dark and stormy skies, still holding his arms in the air to control his floating mechanical slaves.
65 EXT. RAIDEN’S SKY TEMPLE - NIGHT
The conversation between everyone is interrupted, as Kenshi seems to have detected a threat.
KENSHI: “Wait… They’re coming. Loads of them.”
FUJIN: (looking off to the distance, surprised) “Raiden…”
SUB-ZERO: “What should we do?”
FUJIN: “I must not let him find Liu Kang.”
HOTARU: “Can we even fight that many?”
FUJIN: “No. But we can slow them down. I’ll divert Raiden. You must fend the rest of them off. This is it, everyone. This is our final stand against these obscenities terrorizing our realm.”
Before Fujin manages to fly off, he is approached by Jax, who silently extends his hand to him. Fujin smiles slightly and shakes hands with Jax, before sharing one more final look with his comrades and flying off.
THE SKIES OF EARTHREALM
Fujin speeds in a couple hundred miles per hour towards the hordes of Tekunin Sentinels and piledrives upward in the sky, delaying some of the machines from their destination.
66 EXT. REALM OF THE ELDER GODS - DAWN
Fujin lands on a large stone platform in the realm of the Elder Gods. The place seems abnormally quiet and resonating with death and depression. Fujin’s head scans the arena, his voice echoing throughout the desolate heavens.
FUJIN: “Raiden! Raiden!”
Fujin’s calls do not go unanswered. The god of thunder himself teleports to the realm of the Elder Gods, his forehead crossed.
FUJIN: “We have been given a second chance, you know.”
RAIDEN: “I only agree with you on one matter: This world is coming to an end. But with the eye, Shinnok will stabilize the realms and sa-”
FUJIN: “He will not ‘stabilize’ anything! Don’t you understand, at all? He is planting the seeds for the next world! His world! We have no part in his vision!”
RAIDEN: “Liu Kang… Where is he?”
FUJIN: “Years away from you…”
RAIDEN: “Where is he?”
Fujin stands in complete silence across a few feet from Raiden. The thunder god becomes agitated with the lack of answering and zaps his former ally with a painful blast of lightning, followed by an uppercut to the jaw. Fujin falls heavily to the ground as Raiden glows with red lightning.
RAIDEN: “I will not hesitate to kill you if you don’t answer!”
FUJIN: “I know you won’t. But I will not fight back. I already made that mistake once.”
RAIDEN: “I am not here to play games, Fujin. You will tell me where he is, or you will die!”
A fight commences.
Fujin is gravely wounded. Raiden continues to deliver merciless and punishing blows to his former ally and brother. The god of wind’s body flails around like a rag doll as Raiden pummels him further, smashing his skull and breaking his limbs, forcing blood to splatter and stain their clothes and faces. The thunder god tosses Fujin in the air and pounds him back to the ground with a devastating fist. The wind god coughs chunks of blood as he leans against a large pillar in the arena, sitting upright. Raiden floats to the ground in front of him, silent and brooding. Fujin, his face barely recognizable due to the beating received, makes eye contact with his one-time ally.
“All these years… wasted fighting each other… Raiden.”
RAIDEN: “They were not for nothing.”
FUJIN: “Long have we come… To see us disbanded like this… To lose faith… I’m surprised it got so far… Raiden… Have faith.”
Raiden watches Fujin’s life slowly slips away before his very own eyes. The thunder god does not move a muscle, and continues to stare at Fujin’s lifeless body, thinking about what he has done.
CHAPTER 8: LIU KANG
67 EXT. NETHERREALM CITY - DAY
Returning to the forces of light and their struggle to make their way to Shinnok’s spire. Kenshi, wielding his katana, Sento, proudly, continues to cut through the demons of hell with ease. Nightwolf strikes them down with his ancestral weapons. Hotaru impales them in stacks with his naginata. Raiden and Fujin work in tandem to clear the way further for Liu Kang. The shaolin warrior actually manages to reach the stairway to Shinnok’s Palace. Unfortunately, just as he manages to reach the door, Goro comes in and forces him back. Liu Kang prepares himself as Goro draws closer to him.
GORO: “Liu Kang! I have long waited for my revenge!”
LIU KANG: “You picked the wrong time to exact vengeance, shokan.”
A fight commences.
Goro is down, giving Liu Kang unhindered access to the palace.
68 INT. SHINNOK’S SPIRE - THRONE ROOM - DAY
Liu Kang breaks open the door of Shinnok’s throne room, only to find it surprisingly abandoned. Liu Kang, still retaining a fighting stance, slowly nears the throne, scanning the environment for any traps. His focus pays off, as he manages to turn around in time to counter a sneak attack from Shinnok’s general, Reiko.
LIU KANG: “An applaudable effort, assassin.”
A fight commences.
Reiko is down for the count, but in his place arrives the fallen elder god himself, Shinnok. Liu Kang becomes more defensive.
LIU KANG: “You!”
SHINNOK: “You are too late, shaolin warrior. The Eye of Rasal is mine.”
LIU KANG: “You’re meddling in affairs you don’t even understand, fallen one. The Eye does not belong to you!”
SHINNOK: “Insolent Earthrealmer! What do you know of the Eye? Once Armageddon wreaks havoc upon the realms, I will use this ancient artifact to fulfill my desires. There will be none left to stand in my way.”
LIU KANG: “None… But one!”
Shinnok makes none of it and fires a searing blast of flames at Liu Kang, but the shaolin warrior shields himself with his chi, blocking the fire off. For a few intense seconds, it would seem Shinnok’s will is too strong, as Liu Kang drops to a knee, struggling to keep the flames blocked off. Eventually, the shaolin warrior musters enough strength to stand back up and force the flames back. Shinnok ceases firing, noticing the power brewing within Liu Kang.
SHINNOK: “Impressive. But as I have already said, there will be none left to oppose me. I AM the future!”
A fight commences.
The fallen Elder God, Shinnok, once revered as ruler of the Netherrealm, is down on the ground, defeated and humbled. He reaches out to his throne, and the Eye of Rasal appears in a blinding flash. Liu Kang and Shinnok race after each other to get ahold of the Eye first.
69 EXT. RAIDEN’S SKY TEMPLE - NIGHT
As we return to the future, the forces of light are seen battling hordes of Tekunin Sentinels with all of their exerted might. They sweat more than they ever have, before. They assist each other as much as they can. They shed more tears than ever before during the blood-soaking battle, knowing that this was the end.
Kitana becomes stabbed by multiple Tekunin machines. Nightwolf yells loudly, trying to absorb as much yellow ray energy as he can before exploding to pieces. Johnny Cage has his limbs torn apart one-by-one. Sub-Zero and Frost become victim to the tremendous heat from the Tekunin’s grip, literally melting away in their mechanical hands. Kenshi loses focus from being outnumbered by the Tekunin Sentinels, causing him to be quickly surrounded and vaporized. Hotaru is stabbed by his own naginata and dies a slow and painful death. Jax has his own metal arms torn off viciously.
70 EXT. REALM OF THE ELDER GODS
Raiden looks around the crumbling heavens, away from Fujin’s lifeless body, realizing this was truly the end…
71 INT. OIA BASE - NIGHT
Taven and Sonya Blade find the base breached by three Tekunin Sentinels. Liu Kang’s sleeping body remains on the metal bed, as the Tekunin’s eyes slowly glow a golden hue. Taven and Sonya blade stare into the machines eyes in grief and horror.
72 INT. SHINNOK’S SPIRE - THRONE ROOM - DAY
In the heat of the race, Liu Kang and Shinnok extend their hands out to the Eye of Rasal. This was it. Liu Kang knew whoever grabbed it first would be the determiner of the future…
He had succeeded.
73 INT. OIA BASE - NIGHT
FUTURE Taven and Sonya’s teary and dejected faces are brightened by the flash of the Tekunin Sentinels rays, and just when they are about to be exterminated once and for all…
74 INT. LIU KANG’S BEDROOM - DAY
A sharp jolt strikes Liu Kang in the heart as he wakes up from what seemed to be like a nightmare. He rises from his bed, noticing himself donning his casual monk attire.
Liu Kang finds himself in a state of shock and bewilderment as he walks across the hallways, finding things he only dreamed of: Monk children running around happily… Elders laughing and sharing stories… It all seemed so impossible… And yet so real.
75 EXT. WU SHI ACADEMY - DAY
Liu Kang finds himself on a normal sunny day outside. His eyes even widen further at the sight of the this scale of beauty and light not seen in the present day in the span of two years. As he wanders further, he notices Kitana standing in the distance, her back turned, watching the shaolin monks train under Fujin’s instructions.
WU SHI ACADEMY - MAIN ARENA
Kitana, hearing Liu Kang approaching her, turns around. Her beautiful lips curve into a smile.
KITANA: “Liu Kang. You’re awake.”
Liu Kang doesn’t respond. He is still dumbfounded by everything at the moment. Kitana speaks in a softer tone.
KITANA: “Liu Kang? Is everything alright?”
LIU KANG: “Yes… Yes.”
Kitana smiles and leans in, planting a kiss on Liu Kang’s cheek, before walking off. The shaolin warrior approaches Fujin, who dismisses the shaolin monks.
LIU KANG: “We did it.”
FUJIN: “Did what? Liu Kang, you’re awake earlier than usual.”
LIU KANG: “I… Could actually use some help at the moment.”
FUJIN: “With what?”
LIU KANG: “Pretty much everything that happened after 11 years ago.”
Fujin’s facial expression slowly shifts into a more cheerful look.
FUJIN: “Welcome back…”
LIU KANG: (smiling slightly) “It’s good to see you and everyone.”
FUJIN: “I had a promise to keep to myself. You and I have much to catch up on...”
Their reunion is interrupted by a slight rumbling of thunder in the distance. Liu Kang and Fujin look off to the academy walls; it is Dark Raiden. The god of thunder turns around and faces them, crossing his arms. He gives off a barely visible smile to his old comrades as the hue of his eyes suddenly shift into a sky blue.

76 EXT. THE DISTANT SANDS OF PERSIA - DAY
The golden sands of ancient Persia breeze across the desert. Just when the land itself feels empty, we hear distant chanting of appraisal in Farsi, Kir Feroze Belokk! Kir Feroze Belokk! Kir Feroze Belokk!
The chanting becomes louder and louder as we near to the source. Kir Feroze Belokk! Kir Feroze Belokk! Kir Feroze Belokk!
It is revealed that a young tanned adolescent dressed in old garb is the one being praised, standing atop a sandy hill performing wondrous and god-like feats in front of the hundreds of Persians bowing and praising him. He is Kir Feroze Belokk.
Turning to the side, only a small glimpse of his face is captured before the scene ends with a quick cut.
